Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 2/18
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:00 consumed a whole wheat bagel w/ peanut butter & Coffee. Had a 5 hour energy bottle one hour prior to race. I believe I was the 3rd person to arrive. YES call me anal.
Event warmup:

Just did a light log down the run course and back. Talked with a bunch of friends & had some laughs.
Swim
  • 27m 51s
  • 1312 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

Can you say the Long Island Ocean. The water was rough, but I liked the challenge as it was fun to battle thru the chop. I was fortunate to have joined a crew that swam on Thursdays at sunken meadow and this practice paid off. There were times ( not many )at SM that reminded me of these conditions.
What would you do differently?:

Get a swim coach next year to learn a better technique as I know my form is far from perfect.
Transition 1
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

The suit got stuck on the timming chip - Only cost me about 10-15 seconds.
What would you do differently?:

I almost missed the bike on a flying mount - WOW. I need to slow it down a notch and try not to crush the boys - OUCH
Bike
  • 53m 39s
  • 18.02 miles
  • 20.15 mile/hr
Comments:

I was fortunate to have attended the clinic to ride the course 2 weeks prior to the race. This should have helped right? In retrospect this DID NOT help. Why? Because we performed the clinic at a slow speed and it appeared to be easy, but after the swim my HR to zooming and climbing those hills became a challenge. I kept asking myself where the hell did these hills come from
What would you do differently?:

Need more hill work. Weighing 210 lbs it's not easy climbing hills.
Did I say more hill work ?
Transition 2
  • 00m 48s
Comments:

Excellent flying dismount - I was able to do it in one motion.
What would you do differently?:

Nada
Run

My Run Stinks !
What would you do differently?:

I like to blame my slow run time on my size, but the reality is I’m never going to be less to 210. I like to keep my size for Hockey and my gene pool will not allow me to drop below 200. So what do I do? I need a game plan for the run. I just run to run. Talking with a few experienced Tri Members recently they have reinforced the idea of training with a plan – tempo, fartlex, etc.

I need to implement these changes into my 2009 season.

Post race
Warm down:

Just hung around with some club members and met a few new friends. My wife came down with the little guy and that was a perfect ending to my day.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

End of season saturation.....

Nice work yesterday and congrats on the podium spot!! A few of us from the group are talking about weekly track workouts next season if you're interested.

Track workout – absolutely! I’ve decided to skip the Hockey Season this winter as I want to focus my “free time” on core training. I want to cross the 70.3 line with a smile next year

Your run time might have been ok, but your bike was fantastic ... and the swim - well anyone who didn't drown and finished did well that day.

You're foregoing Ice Hockey in favor of core training this Winter.  Wow.  Hmmm...  now you got me thinking... perhaps I'll do both

Great way to end the season!
