Checking in and saying hi! Did a 16 miler (longest run since my injury to the post tib tendon) and it went well, tho tops of the feet hurt like heck afterwards. Now my shin is sore (argh!) thinking I may have ramped up too quickly after my pool running for two weeks. We'll see how it goes, I have a 20 mile run scheduled on Wednesday if I feel up to it, before I do a somewhat short(er) taper of 10 days.

My friend is doing the half mary, her first ever! I forget if the start times for half and full are the same (anyone know?). Also, I wanted to warn her about the one incline I vaguely remember from last year when I did the half...I don't remember it lasting a "couple miles"...really? Did I just blank on those miles? I thought it lasted maybe half a mile or something...

Good luck everyone! Also, to contribute to dinner recommendations, there's this awesome little Italian restaurant at the Penns View hotel, they also have a great wine bar (ok, don't go nuts the night before the race, but a glass of wine is supposed to be beneficial to endurance athletes, I've read that somewhere...).

Half & full start at the same time.

There's some light hills over the course of a couple miles, but no hills that last for a couple miles (probably not even for a half-mile).  Most meaningful hill on the half comes around mile 7 or 8 and it's pretty much dead flat until then.  For the next few miles (until maybe mile 10?) there are some other modest hills and it doesn't return to "dead flat" until you descend back down to the river drive for the final 2-3 miles.

Looks like we're in the Taper phase now ...  Good Luck to everyone.

I came down with a little case of IT Band Syndrome.  I see a Sports MD tomorrow.  ITBS sucks because my fitness is very good right now and physically my legs look perfect, but everytime I run on anything but a perfectly flat surface, I get an excruciating pain on the outside of my right knee.  I'm not going to run for for 10 consecutive days and just cross train (swim, bike, strength training) and then I'll go for a run on the 19th or 20th and see what happens.  If I can run over 10 miles with zero symptoms, then I'll give it a shot and do the marathon.  If not, I'll see you guys next year.

Surprised no one has posted weather "forecasts" yet....It's about time to start weather obsessing!!!! That's a key part of the taper isn't it??

Dream Chaser, hope the ITB heals up.

Thanks Man.  I hope it's gone in time soon, too.  As far as the weather -->

Speaking of weather... this is the coldest race I have done (tri or run). What do you do with a heavy layer that you want to shed during the race. Wear something old and just toss it?

It's hard to say exactly what the weather will be at this point.  But assuming a chilly start (decent bet for 7am in Nov), you can wear an outer layer at the start and ditch it there (my preference if I wear one at all) or do so along the course.  Old sweatshirt, or the like, is typical.  Same for gloves, but these you are more likely to want to wear for at least the first few miles if it is cold.  Either stuff them in a pocket or just get some cheap "disposables".

Averages for this time of year are 52 for a Hi and 37 for a Lo.

Right now longest range forecast I can find is 10 day which takes us to Nov 20th with a Hi of 48 and low of 31. (and sunny)

Hopefully that trend holds through the weekend. Last years race was a miserable, cold and wet experience...and I was only a spectator....Laughing

Yeah, it was cold and rainy. I ditched the long sleeve cotton T I had and the gloves. Ended up picking up a shirt and mismatched gloves off the ground many miles later. Don't ditch what you may bee later. Shirt could have easily been tied around my waist and gloves can go in waistband of shorts. I do it on training runs all the time.

Ack, a little over a week to go! I've been injured the last month of training (post tib tendonitis), so I'm hoping to do the marathon with only two 16 mile long runs under my belt. My first mary I did having already done two 20 milers. It's really freaky to think about.

Anyone else struggling with what feels like a pretty big hurdle?

(encouragement please!)

P.S. Weather-wise, showers on Friday, Nov 21st, but sunny on Saturday...no word yet on Sunday, but maybe that's a good omen!

I've been battling IT Band syndrome for the last 3 weeks.  First time I've had it in 3 years of running!! Sucks.  I saw a good Sports Doc though and he's very optmistic that I'll be able to run the marathon and he performed some A.R.T. and Graston on me that has worked so far.

I only have one 20-miler under my belt.  I think the key for me (and perhaps you ) will be to honestly assess what is a realistic marathon goal based on our current physical status and based off of what training we were able to do.   For me personally, if I can run 26.2 pain free at a 7:59 avg pace (sub 3:30) I will be a happy camper.  The original goal was a BQ ... but luckily I'm young and I'll have many more chances to BQ.

Let's hope for a great day and great weather, and just have a GOOD TIME!!

Yeah, you're miles ahead of me, Chaser...I was hoping for a solid sub 4 hour race, though at this point, I guess I could be happy with shaving some significant time off my original marathon (4:27--I was a much slower runner back then). Maybe I could convince myself to be happy with a 4:10 or 4:15...?

How's everyone holding up?

I'm sore, pain in my hip and knees for the last month of high weekly milage, so tapering has become more of a rest with some light runs over the last few days and into next week. My goal is around 415, but I have no idea how the race will progress.

Lets hope we get a great day!

I was just thinking the exact same thing this morning.  It's 60 degrees here on Long Island!   If we can get 55+ degrees on race morning, I will be an uber happy camper

Saw low of 27 and high of 39 on weather.com. Sunny and no rain. A little cool for my liking, but what do you expect for 11/23?

That would be great for me.  It's always a little rough before the race starts in that kind of temp, but it would be ideal for running.

Hi all. Just joing BT and quite like it. So late in the Philly game here. Running the full and my first time to the city. We are coming down from canada a few days early. For you folks from the area are there any good tri stores in the region?

 Cheers Thanks

Not really any good tri-specific shops nearby, but you could go check out Cadence in Manayunk and preview part of the marathon course at the same time.  A visit to Elite Bicycles in Philly is always worthwhile too if you want to talk bikes with some good people.

Look- Essentially we've been training for a very long time for this marathon. We're triathletes. If you're anything like me, you've had a pretty busy season. I did my first HIM at the end of August. After that I started to zero in on this marathon. I have one 22 miler, one 18 miler, one 16 miler and multiple 14 milers in prep for this race. My goal isn't to qualify for Boston or anything like that. To me- I will feel on top of the world just to finish and know that I did the big "26.2". Don't feel bad- I was hurting so bad during the last 2 miles of the 22 miler that passing the finish line will be reward enough.I would hardly even call it a run because I was hobbling down the road. Seriously- don't go into this with a time in mind. Just do the best you can and feel wonderful and grateful that you have the ability and opportunity to participate. Not everyone is in your position.

There a few shops around that do tri stuff but I don't know of a single "Tri" specific stores. Lots of good bike shops. There a ton of things to do in the area though. Cadence in Manayunk is a cool place, that is big into tri's and serious training. I'm not running the race this year but did a couple years ago. It is a nice race. Lots of good people. I may come down to volunteer. I am on call that day so i am not sure. Looks pretty cold as listed now.

Hey, thanks for the kind words. These are all great things to keep in mind. I AM grateful for being able to do this race, it's a fantastic course, and I love being out there and accomplishing something not everyone does. I guess I was a little hung up on the time because I've already done a marathon before--my first one two years ago, so it was also my "OMG, I'm gonna run 26.2 miles!!!" race. I thought I needed a bigger and better "goal" for this one. Maybe still just doing those 26.2 miles (!!) is goal enough. I can focus on what I can accomplish and still be proud of that. Thanks.

Just got my bib number today (7743 is my new lucky number!) and I'm really looking forward to Sunday!
