Subject: Race with a purpose??
I'm planning my first HIM next summer, Timberman at the end of August. I am really looking forward to all the training that this will require and have thought about making it even more meaningful by raising some money for a charity while I'm at it. I'm thinking of a local homeless shelter.

Any thoughts on this? I'd love any input as to the best way to go about this!

Yeah it does sound like a great idea, im sure a lot of people do it out there randomly. How would you go along and raise money for a cause like this?

Yup, I'm registered for Timberman. That was the easy part! Now I want to make it count.

I'll donate to any cause as long as you change your avatar.

That clown baby is freakin' me out!

How about the 'Save the Clown Babies' fund?

Triathlon training in and of itself can be a selfish endeavor given the time and effort it takes to prepare yourself for the distance and/or time goals.  Adding an additional purpose to the training not only helps that cause but also provides additional motiviation knowing that your donors (read: friends and family) will now have a vested interest.

There are a variety of ways you can set-up an on-line donation page.  A quick Google search came up with this: http://www.networkforgood.org/NPO/fundraising/donations/

I have supported The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team-in-Training since 2005.  I am not certain whether they have a chapter in Ontario.  Awesome program that does some pretty awesome things for people suffering with cancer.

If you have a cause and desire to raise money for Absolutely you should. I raised $3,000 through Janus Charity Challenge at Ironman Lake Placid in July. I believe that it made the experience of the race a much better experience. I don't believe Janus handles Half Ironman races, but I know many people raise money during those races, such as team in training. I think the first thing you need to do is approach the charity you wish to raise money for. I realize you have a charity in mind already. But take a look at Jon Blais's website. They will set you up with a web page for fundraising. http://www.waronals.com/team_blazeman.php there is a way to set up your own page on there. That makes it alot easier to raise money. More than half of my $3,000 was donated online, alot by people whom I have never met. What ever you decide, I wish you the best of luck in the race and in your fundraising.
