I have a flawless anti-cc-theft device. Just always have maxed out credit cards . jk

I agree, better enforcement of check ID would fix the problem. While I've been in Hawaii I have been asked for ID almost every time..it's refreshing.

Do you have this kind of lock?

They are near impossible to break into.  However, if you have the other kind of combo lock (the kind with 3 or 4 tumblers that you can set to any combo you want), it can take less than a minute for someone to figure out the combo and open it.

Yeah...... well not really, its quite easy to open, a toy:

That sucks!! I have never had my credit cards stole; however, I have been the victim of identity theft.  Someone copied my drivers lics. and opened up several accounts in my name.  I called the three credit reporting agencies and imitated a fraud warning on my account.  That way, anytime anyone opens an account with my name, they will call a phone number I have listed.  Here are the links to the reporting agencies Equifax, Experian (TRW).

Note TRW is now accessed through experian.com.

Good luck.

Don't leave anything in a gym locker, it does not matter what type of lock you use, they will get in. Worse off is to leave it in your car, because these are theft rings they know what works and where to look and how not to get caught.

Best defence is to have your wallet on yourself at all times (gym bag, pocket, fanny pak). These theft rings have employees involved including the janitors. This is a huge problem and has been for a long time, it is way more common than you think.

Question:  Why not lock your wallet in the trunk of your vehicle prior to going to the gym?

The only card I carry into the gym (local Y) is my membership card and it gets handed off at the front desk.

From the sounds of it, you were a random target the first time and a known target the second time.  Sorry this happened and hope the perps are nailed - literally.

Dude, that sucks. I had to cancel my cards one time after I left my wallet somewhere and it was likely that someone had just seen the numbers (the cards weren't stolen, but the information was compromised), and it's a pain. Even more of a pain to do it twice in one month!

Funny CC theft story, though: my parents received a fraud alert call yesterday morning from Citibank. Apparently someone had tried to use their card on Saturday night... for an escort service!! They still have the cards, and it was obvious that neither of them had used them for that purpose, so someone must have seen the information. Anyway, they're going to have to go through the song and dance of canceling the cards, but they got a good laugh out of it.

UPDATE:  Not much to report.  Went by the police tonight to view some pics and video from various security cam footage.  Quality was too poor to really help and the dudes wore ball caps which covered most of their face when viewed from the camera angles.  Was the same guys though.  Turns out 3 others got hit the 2nd time I did, so that's to total of 5 in less then a month in the same gym.  Got my replacement card tonight and am tempted to leave it in my locker one day to see if I can bust these a-holes myself.  :-(

- in CA, it is not mandatory check ID when making a CC purchase - I was amazed.  The detective recommended that I write "CHECK ID" on the back of all my CCs.

Actually it is against ALL credit card policy to name check credit cards.  You know the commerical for mastercard with everyone moving about crazy like then they come to a dead stop when someone pays with cash.    And by writing "Ask for ID" you are violating the card agreement by not signing your name and the merchant is NOT allowed to accept your un-signed credit card.

This particular name checking is a hobby of my brother's as he has a daughter who unfortunately has to visit her mother from time to time and her mom does not pay for things like - oh the doctor or a restaurant bill so she at the tender age of 10 had her own credit card.  Well, one day she was out shopping with her step mother and she went to purchase a pair of sneakers.  the store (I won't mention name's of the Lady store...) refused her credit card as she had no ID.... Long story short - my brother won big lawsuit and got Big Brother program of LA a nice sneaker donation for the kids as his settlement.

My point isd name checking credit cards is pointless as it's so easy to get fake ID - what's the point.  here is the actual web site listing what is NOT allowed from mercants:

http://www.mastercard.com/us/personal/en/contactus/merchantviolations.html

In order to make a MasterCard purchase, the merchant/retailer required a minimum or       maximum amount.
The merchant/retailer is adding a charge for using your MasterCard card.
 The merchant/retailer required identification.
A merchant/retailer displaying the MasterCard decal in their window refused to accept       my MasterCard card.

Just some food for thought.....

to OP sorry you've had to go thru this soo much lately.

Yeah, I do not get the laws/guidelines on this.  Seems like a huge percentage of this crime would be cut down on if a simple policy of checking ID for all credit card purchases was in place.  Obviously that won't work for online purchases but IMO those are not as easy to pull off as this type of crime.  Apparently the banks make about $20 billion a year and credit card theft/fraud amounts to "only" $3 billion, so the banks are up $17 bil, so who cares?!
