Overall Rank = 19/439
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 5/36
Pre-race routine:

This was a special race. A "real runner" friend of mine was doing his first Tri and the bet had been made. He always smokes me running but I told him there are 3 sports in a triathlon (not confident but I couldn't back down). I would be sporting a "stash" if I lost and would receive no love from my wife over it.
Event warmup:

300 swim and some light stretching
Swim
  • 12m 36s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 41s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim was good and I beat Chris out of the water by 3 minutes. I knew I would need at least that to keep him from catching me.
What would you do differently?:

More time in the water but my fastest swim yet
Transition 1
  • 02m 36s
Comments:

I had tore my feet up on a practice run without socks so I had to wear socks for the race. I hate having to put socks on for a Sprint but what do you do? It was a long run from the water through transition and you had to pack your swim gear becasue of the point to point. That slowed me way down.
What would you do differently?:

no socks, practice packing?
Bike
  • 49m 29s
  • 12.5 miles
  • 15.16 mile/hr
Comments:

I pushed hard on this ride. I knocked 5 minutes off my time last year and felt good about the bike. Chris got 2 minutes on me on the bike. Ouch! I am glad I didn't know that during the race.
What would you do differently?:

More time in the saddle but I am happy with my gains.
Transition 2
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

I tried platforms for the first time especially for this race. Your run gear is bagged so you have to find your bag and open it. I thought this would be a good way to get some time. I had to adjust the platforms twice but I still think it was worth the time. It was the second fastest T2 time and I got 48 seconds on him in the transition.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 21m 16s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

I had it figured out how much time I needed at the turnaround to beat Chris. It was not enough. I knew he was going to catch me at that point. I decided to at least leave what I had on the course and pushed the last half. Coming down the last stretch I peaked back to see where he was. I didn't see him but I heard my wife yell "don't look back!". I had to look again. Not there! I got him!
What would you do differently?:

I knocked 2 minutes off my run from last year. Helps I guess being chased!
Post race
Warm down:

Walk and lots of water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

good day

Event comments:

Great race, Great day. I recommend this race.

I would definitely agree that it is a tough course especially for the Half.  I thought it was a very well run event.  Did the Half live up to expectations?

Congrats!   Did the HIM as well, I think the hills on the bike were oversold a bit, it wasn't that bad.  the run had a couple momentum killing hills, I thought they were harder than the hills on the bike
