Wow, what an incredible day.   Other than finally realizing how friggin hard an IM mary is, it couldn't have gone better, I couldn't be happier, more elated.  Getting off the bike I had a fantasy of a sub 12 finish.  It stayed for the first 3 miles, then suddenly vanished at mile 4, and stayed gone.  Think I went a bit too hard on the first loop of the bike.  Once it was gone it allowed me to walk whenever I wanted (tempered by getting sub 13) and enjoy the aid stations.  Christ, that was hard.  It was only knowing I had 5 miles left that allowed me to pick up the pace a little bit.

Chris you were awesome! It was great to spend the day with your wife and Cat and J and cheer for you. I will have to pick your brain for tips on this course next year

I just want to say thanks so much to everyone on this board who was cheering for me yesterday! As you all know by now, I didn't finish the race. I ended up in the ER with hyponatremia. It was a bad day for me on the bike, I was stopping at every aid station to get sick. I just couldn't keep anything in me. I made the bike cut off and was done. I actually gained 8 pounds during the race! I'm much better today and looking forward to IMFL in November!

Glad to hear you are alright, I was wondering what happened. I guess you just chalk it up as experience, and get ready for next year. Good luck in 09!

Thanks so much everyone. Every time I went over a timing mat I thought of the BT community and hoped the updates were getting through

I'm pretty sure I can do better than I how I did, but man am I excited with having done that. There are lots of things I'd like to do differently, but you know ... it was still amazing. Thanks for all the inspires and good thoughts and everything!!

Man, that was fun reading through the thread!  It was like I was there....wait a minute, I was there!  :-

Full details in RR; however, just to give a short synopsis:

Swim:  I was hoping for 1:14 and elated with 1:12

Bike:  Perfect (for 80 miles or roughly 2 1/4 loops).  I had Both the front and rear tires FLAT at the same time!  (right at the base of the Beeline Hwy).  SAG support # 1 took 26 minutes - yes, I timed it...lol).  Got 5 miles up the Beeline and pffft (another flat - front tire for the 2nd time in less than 5 miles)...SAG support # 2 (I was out of tubes and CO2 cartridges).  This delay took 12 minutes.  I was hoping for 6:00 but accepting of 6:40 (considering the delays)

Run:  My left knee held up great (IT Band)...my hammy's were a different story.  They never locked up completly, they definately forced me to minimize my stride.

Finishing SHUTE:  Speechless

I'll steal a line from those MasterCard commericals:

      Ironman Entry Fee:  $ 500

Travel Time:               Driving 15 1/2 hrs nonstop

      Lodging:                   $ 200

Finishing Time:         13 hours and 47 minutes

Running down Ash and turning left onto Rio Salado and hearing Mike Riley say

"Brian Karhu, from The Colony, Texas.....You Are An Ironman!"         PRICELESS

Also great on seeing the rest of you all. Just got done reading the thread, awesome.

I love BT'ers , you rule. Now time to recover, my legs are still shot, and need some more reloading. Guess I have pleanty of cookies to go for the next year.

THANK YOU everyone for all of the support and for those die hards, a special thank you! For those who don't know, diabetics can "Tri" too! We just have some special challenges in regulating blood sugar levels and preventing ourselves from going hypoglycemic. It got a little wiggy out there for me during the 1st and 2nd loop of the bike course, but I'll save it for the race report after a long, long nap!

Thanks again!

That sound like what happened to me last April at IMAZ. I was too pigheaded to not do the marathon and passed out (twice) on the race course before they removed me to the medics tent. I was (again) too pigheaded to stay there or go to the ER (athough my wife drove me to the ER, but I would not get out of the car).

IMAZ 09 is my next chance, and I WILL finish.

Best of luck in IMFL (you will finish too)!!!!

Congrats to all.

I was out there volunteering all day/night.

I saw Jeepster on the run course but that was it as far as recognizing BT peeps.

Beautiful day all around !

Thanks to all who kept track of the race.  It was awesome running it, but in some ways, its more fun reading through all the recaps and reliving it without the cold swim, gatorade and GU stomach ache, blisters, and sore feet.  I just wish I could run the last 1/4 mile again and again (it was painless).  Congrats to the finishers (especially us 1st timers)!  Those who didn't make it, hang in there.

Let me throw in my thanks as well.  We truely have a great community on this board.

As for the race, wasn't the day I expected either with the training I did or the incredible weather - but, it is still satisfying finishing.   Looking forward to next year focusing on all the local races.  Who knows, maybe another IM in 2010.

Happy Thanksgiving to all.
