Have you ever gotten motion sickness when swimming?

Expert  936    Springfield, MO |  Subject: Have you ever gotten motion sickness when swimming?I swam in the ocean yesterday and I thought I was having a pretty good swim. Especially since I haven't swam in a long time. I only swam for about 15 mins and felt good, but when I stopped and began to walk out of the water I started feeling weird. Motion sickness began and lasted most of the day. The water was pretty calm - maybe only 1 to 1.5 ft. I was breathing bilaterally which may have exacerbated things. Anyone else exerpience motion sickness in similar conditions? Does dehydration play a part? |

I had a similair experience with 55 degree water and no swim cap or ear plugs. Pretty sure there are multiple threads about cold water and the inner ear = dizzy or motion sickness |

Ended up having to breast stroke the last portion because it was hard to keep my head in the water with the way it was throwing us around. |

I spent six years in the US Navy and tried a few times to be a SEAL, aka tons of time in and on the ocean. A year or so ago I was freediving with a buddy and got "sea sickness" for the first time in my life outside of hurricanes in Puerto Rico. I was actually pissed off for a few days because I let the ocean whip me, and it wasn't a terribly rough day as we were able to at least see the ends of our fins. Never happened before, or after and I was in the ocean the next day. |

Expert 1158 Ocala, Florida | Subject: RE: Have you ever gotten motion sickness when swimming? yep, happened in my first Tri and OWS this past summer at Daytona. the ocean temp. was nice and warm and there was little seas. did the entire swim in a decent time and felt great. i stood up to run to T1 and nearly lost my breakfast. i was really sick through most of the bike. my next race was in a lake and i experienced no motion sickness after that swim. no doubt the ocean played havoc with my stomach that first race. not sure how i'll adjust for future races. i get motion sickness very very easily and i expect it to happen again. |

I've gotten motion sickness while SCUBA diving in pretty rough seas (hadn't actually gone under yet, was hanging around at the top of the water waiting for the rest of my party). It was awful! Thankfully once you are actually 'under' there isn't a problem. I've worried about this with OWS. I swam 1.6 miles this past summer across our harbor on a pretty choppy day and was fine (except for the diesel fumes from boats), but if the water is ever as rough as it was the day that I was diving... I'd be in a world of trouble. I'm normally a motion sensitive person (always take Triptone or Dramamine before boating/plane rides), but 'so far' the OWS that I've done haven't bothered me. When you are boating, they say that dehydration does play into motion sickness. I'm not sure what I would do. If I had a race and the water looked 'that' rough, I would probably just go ahead and take a non-drowsy triptone or dramamine. |

Since I started wearing earplug, no problemo. Now boats are a different story. When I fishing with my buddy, I always drink a beer or two, it really seems to help with seasickness. |

I put it down to breathing only to one side rounding the bouy when I normally do bi-lateral. The water was cloudy so I figure it was somethng to do with all the rolling from ca't see conditions to clear open sky to breathe. Havne't tried it for a few months now so don't know for sure. |

My turns are pathetically slow, or 'leisurely' as someone once said. I wonder if the speed of the flip can be an issue. And don't ask me to stand in the pool and to just flip, flip, flip as a means of practice. I will hurl for sure. |

Member 297 | Subject: RE: Have you ever gotten motion sickness when swimming? What you experienced is not uncommon. Not sure what you can do about it except take dramamine before hand. Perhaps with more swim time in the ocean you'll adapt to the motion. Matt Cazalas

I used to get motion sickness after getting out of the ocean during races (I don't bilateral breathe). I used to have to use a nose plug. Then I heard that ear plugs would stop motion sickness and dizziness so I tried that and it worked for me. Now I use neither and I don't have a problem. Except for last weekend, we had our first winter waves -- swells of around 5 feet and I got a little motion sickness while swimming. Going up and down and side to side while turning my head and no horizon just got to me. fortunately I was smart enough to turn around. One tourist drown that day and a kayaker was lost (they are still searching for him). |
