About as ready as I can be given the challenges I've had in training. After doing the Marine Corps Marathon 10k today and seeing the 26 mile marker as I neared the finish, I definitely got excited!

All set and looking forward to it.  Any one have any tips or helpful hints for what to do for the 2 plus hours waiting around for the start?

Ill be over-tired and under-trained. I really did not get the training in like I wanted to and I ended up bagging my last long run bc my ankle was the size of a baseball from getting hit with a hockey puck. Oh well, should be a "fun" and interesting day.

I always eat before I go, then just snack and drink during that ridiculous wait. They have a lot of food there so you can be tempted to overdo it. Take a garbage bag (or two) or better yet, I take a sheet of mylar, and use it to sit on and stay warm if needed. The ground tends to be wet out there and you will need to sit and relax. I like the mylar because it folds up tiny, but spreads out huge and someone else can sit on it with you. Plus if you're freezing you can wrap up in it.

I always buy a throw-away outfit from old navy - yoga pants and a fleece and wear it right up to the start corral and toss it. You can also wear things you have that you don't mind throwing out. They usually collect the clothes for charity I think.

People aren't overly social with strangers so I'd bring whatever you need to keep yourself calm and entertained. Oh, and I time my final porta potty trip to just about gun time, otherwise you'll be one of the 30,000 people who can't even make it across the bridge without stopping to pee, which to me is a waste of time

Good luck and have fun!

I'm running too. It's my first marathon, and I'm soooo nervous/excited. I've been training for 6 months but recently tweaked my achilles during a training run on mile 11 of a 14 miler. 14 miles has been my longest training run and it kicked my butt. I've been logging about 30 miles a week though.

Any advice is appreciated. I hope the weather is beautiful.

I'll be there - jockstrapping for my husband.  He has done Boston, but this is his first NY marathon.  We are excited to get there and enjoy your fabulous city!  Thanks for the advice about pre-race Lazy Marathoner - I will pass that along.

Hi Tracy! We met at IMWI - remember? I believe we shared a volunteer shift and we definitely ran into each other a couple more times. How fun for your husband! Weather is looking good this year, but it usually is in NY for the marathon (unlike Chicago). It's an incredibly fun race, he will love it! Do you have someone to jockstrap with? I can give you pointers on locations and getting around if needed.

I do remember meeting you - with the arm sling.  I'm sure you're happy that is now gone!  I'll be jockstrapping with my 10 year old son so any pointers will be gladly accepted!  I'm definitely bringing my cowbell!  Looking forward to taking it all in on race day.  Good Luck to you all!

Hey guys, sorry I'm late to the party, Kristin pointed me in the right direction. Best of luck to everyone - this will be my 5th NYC, but 1st race after a 3yr hiatus, can't wait to be back out there.

There are definitely some good tips notes above RE pre-race. Something I always try to do is over-dress in layers and peel things off as gun-time approaches. I personally prefer warmer conditions than are forecast for Sunday, so I'll still be fairly bundled up until a min or 2 before the start & then pull everything off.

Regarding the race itself, these are a few links which you may also find helpful:

NYC Marathon Race Report '05 (2:49): This is my RR from the '05 race & goes into quite a bit of detail on how I approaced the race. It wasn't a perfectly executed race as I had more fall-off than I would have preferred over the 2nd 1/2 (Splits: 1:22 / 1:27), but all in all, it was a great race for me. It may help you also visualize certain sections & how you'll handle them on race day.

NYC Marathon Pace Calculator: I don't know if you guys have seen this, but it is a VERY COOL spreadsheet put together to assist w/ proper pacing. It takes into account all grade changes to help you pace based on the specific difficulty of each mile. It also has a lot of helpful spectator info which you could pass onto friends.

So lets hear some predictions?!?

Thanks for posting that link Brian.  I've seen that over in the RunnersWorld forums - MAN, whoever did that had some time on their hands.

I'm all set to go.  Long runs have been a little tough for me, but I've had some real quality weekday workouts (which probably made me tired for the weekend long runs, duh!!)

Good luck everyone for tomorrow - weather looks fantastic - cold but dry

Yes indeed the ground does tend to be very wet out there, take newspapers, mylar, plastic bags and also plenty of clothes to keep warm and take double if you are planning to check a bag as you will be moved into the start area early. I also recommend a gatorade bottle (empty) so you can take your last pit stop while you wait on or near the bridge.

I think the new wave starts this year will ease congestion. Have fun, plenty of it and enjoy the crowd support.

Cheers,

Arpad

I went for a short run this morning that included a preview of the final stretch, up to the finish line.

I got really pumped up seeing the crowd there (including many international runners there for the "International Friendship Run".  It was a great sight, and I can't wait to see it again tomorrow afternoon !!!!!

Good luck to everyone!

Dan

How was everyone's race? It was a perfect day for a marathon, except for the sitting around freezing on Staten Island part

It was awesome! It was my first and everything were well organized. The waves and corrals really made starting spaced out nicely. It was a bit windy on the Verrazano but overall the weather was perfect. I made the rookie mistake of going out a little too fast and missed going under 4 hours by 43 seconds...really faded near the end...well, that'll be a good motivation for the next one!
