My dad took a few pics during the event - I've posted them to this album in case you're interested.

This race was incredible.  I don't think I've endured that much since leaving the Navy - and I think that I seriously underestimated what it'd take to complete it.  I kept telling myself that I'd been through a hell of a lot more in my past life so this wouldn't be that bad....well, I failed to appreciate that I left the Navy 15 years ago and I'm a lot older now.  Plus, this is just one hell of a sport and I have a newfound respect for anyone who completes it.  I now know that I have a lot of work to do before my next one.  Last night I told my wife I'd never do it again....she told me that I shouldn't say that now, that that's like a woman in the middle of child birth saying she'll never have anymore kids.  Not that an HIM is like bearing a child, but the idea is the same.  I'll do it again, but next time I'll know what to expect and what I have to do to prepare.

I will definately do it again.  I was concerned going into it because I hadn't really followed my training plan but everything turned out great.  Oh, except the headwind on the last 18 of the bike.  I met some great people out on the run and we kept each other going during the last mile when the rain started coming down.  An awesome day overall!

Ha!  I'm sure you'll do another one...remember, this is only your FIRST YEAR doing them!  Glad we got to see you through your first one until this one!

Great job everyone, it was tough out there.  I absolutely love the feel of big races and Steelhead is one of my favorites!

tjtryon - 2009-08-02 6:36 PM There is something that 18 miles on the Blue Star, in those strong headwinds does to bring together the tired, sore, empty souls of everyone afterwards.

My thoughts exactly. Everyone I talked to, on the course and off were great. Whether it was running with people, words of encouragment as I got passed on the bike, or several hands reaching out to help me up the step of the pavilion after the race. Everyone seemed great to me. Sorry you had a different experience.
Hey, it was nice chatting with you this weekend, sorry we never got a chance to meet up.

Likewise. Sorry it didn't work out. Next time we'll be more organized.

I was at the expo at 2:00 but I did not manage to run into anyone except Freshjive. However I did have an entertaining conversation with Brad in the morning

I left my house at about 9:30 Friday morning and started driving to Benton Harbor. After about 10 minutes I remembered to turn my wife's cell phone on and put it on the seat beside me. A few minutes later the phone starts making an odd musical tone and I pick it up to find that it is dialing. Not knowing who it was dialing I touched "end call" and put it back on the seat. A couple of minutes later Brad calls. Apparently the phone had been dialing his number and he recognized my phone number from the contact list that he had circulated. This was pretty strange as I don't know Brad and I have never called him. I have no idea how the phone started dialing his number, although it may have something to do with the text message that he sent out the night before. Anyway, the phone tried dialing someone again a few times over the weekend, so if that was your number again Brad I hope I wasn't ruining your weekend

Hey Everyone!
Enjoyed talking with a few BT'ers who were wearing the same BT shirts!

I also stayed at the KOA, very nice campground.

My swim was great 30:41, my bike was as good as can be expected with the wind at 2:29, but my run, ohhh man, first it was hot, then my body realized I wasn't going to stop after 6.2 miles.  I ran a 2:30 half marathon, embarrassing!  Oh well like a previous post said, your first is the hardest and now I know what I have to work on.

I really enjoyed the race, athletes and volunteers.  So many volunteers and you couldn't thank them all individually, so I will officially say "thanks to all the volunteers!".  I told my wife we should volunteer at an Ironman event in the future.

I read a quote last week on Twitter "Everyone has a plan until you get punched in the face" - Mike Tyson.

I can truly say about 40 miles into the bike I found out extactly what he was talking about!!!

I am truly proud to say I finished - even though I REALLY REALLY wanted to stop in T2. Like everyone else, the wind really took everything I had at the end of the bike, and my legs were a cramping, knoted mess going into the run. I did push on with the run, but ended up turning what I thought would be a little over 2 hour run into over a 3 hour run/walk.

It was a great experience - the race was very well run and I will definatly be back next year. Need to work on the bike/run and nutrition, but I am proud to be a 70.3 finisher!!

Congrats to everyone who finished.

I never got the chance to meet up with anyone, glad to hear everyone finished and did so safely.  I "enjoyed" the experience, but my feet limited my run.  See my race report for details:  http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=172862

Did anyone else have issues with the blacktop tearing up their feet in the transition area?  Feet still hurt and legs are recovering.  Hope everyone made it home OK.

So I saw the preliminary results from the timing company and I'm a bit confused.  They talked a lot about us having around 2500 participants, yet this says that only 1661 finishers.  I can't imagine that 839 people dropped.  I can't wait for all of the official stats to see what happened there.

I was wondering about that as well... I had thought they capped it at 1800 and then everyone was talking about 2500 entries?  Interesting.

I wonder if the wind on the last leg of the bike and then the rain storm had a big impact on the later groups?  Some may have decided to call it a day or were slowed enough not to make the cut-off time?

Could be.  A friend of mine inspired me before I'd written anything asking if I'd had mechanical issues cuz my bike time was off - he said he was checking my times...I had no idea how he was doing that since I wasn't one of the ones wearing a GPS.  Apparently Ironman.com was tracking us live. http://ironman.com/events/ironman70.3/steelhead70.3/?show=coverage&... Click on the 2009 race coverage then click the Updates link in the upper right.  I just went out there and found where you can put in a bib number or name and get live updates of the splits - that's how he knew.

What's interesting, though, is that they report 1769 participants....so who knows what the real number is.

First off, I haven't weighed in since race day but I had a great time out there.  The course was beautiful despite the rain (Muncie was worse) and the crappy, crappy roads.  But, luckily I am from this part of MI and am used to the road conditions.

Specifically I wanted to respond to the wind question.  I was crusing at a solid 23.9 MPH for the first 33 miles of the bike.  I had two mechanicals (blown tubes) in rapid succession immediately after the 33 mile mark.  The first one I kind of took in stride but the 2nd just pissed me off.  I basically gave up on trying to maintain a solid bike split and just sat up and rode the hoods the rest of the time.  My bike split on the race results is 3 hours and some change and my bike computer reads at just under 2 hours and 45 minutes... so I lost a big chunk of time.  Add in the wind and I figured why push it?  I was the second to last swim wave to take off and from what I've heard the wind got progressively worse throughout the day and I know that there were a lot of people suffering towards the end... I was moving pretty slow for the last 18 miles but was still passing people left and right...

In the end though I shouldn't complain.  I love this distance and I thought that the volunteers and crowd support was amazing!

I agree!! The volunteers were amazing and everyone out on the course was GREAT!!!  I talked to some really nice people out on the run - and had a couple good laughs.  The "pink" girls were TOO funny!!  They made me smile every time around! *giggling*

I biked the run course late Friday afternoon before racking my bike, and then ended up walking back to our car in bare feet. Saturday morning I had blisters on my feet from the hot blacktop.

I was unpacking today and realized that I have two caps from my wave - so if anyone lost their cap (Red Wave) I have an extra.  I feel really bad about taking someone else's cap ... I was rushing to pack up in the rain...

I worked the penalty box at transition.  We had one participant stop and go to medical rather than transition and I took chips from 6 people who didn't make the bike cutoff.  Not sure if others stopped after going into T2 or not.

As a volunteer that has been doing this race for 4 years, I know that they assigned 2500 bib numbers.  They had several pros, as well as other athletes, not show up to collect packets.  The pros don't show when they think their game is off.  Other athletes don't show up for other reasons.  McFuzz, for example, had to request a medical deferral for this year's race.  There may have been others with the same dilemma.  Others just decide that their training hasn't been consistent or good enough to race so they don't even bother to show up.  I know at least 1 athlete came out of the swim injured, so his day was done.  Others may have been injured in the other 2 legs of the race.  It is normal for there to be about 15% that just don't show up.

That's why I don't leave my shoes on the bike like the pro's!  After the swim is OK because the sun hasn't warmed the asphalt up to 400F, but after the bike...

Contrats to everyone who raced this year, and many thanks to all the volunteers.
This was my first 70.3 and i'll admit it was HARD!. The swim of course was awesome, vary fast and flat (I was wave 10). The bike was good. I was a little disappointed in the route... the long last straight road was pretty rough. Then the run... hahaha. at this point I had the ability to run and I felt good, but I have a lingering foot injury (subluxated cuboid bone). So after 3km a bone in my foot dislocated and large amounts of pain followed every step. seeing I went this far and trained for 8 months and bit my lip and ran vary slow for the entire run. I went to Steelhead looking for a sub 6 and came home 1 minuet and 7 seconds above. I think I'll call it a success.

I'd also like to give a big thanks to DaveH. Dave helped my throughout the training giving me tonnes of tips and pointers that only experience can give you. Without them i'm sure my time would have been much higher
Cheers,
