I'm about to sell my road bike on eBay. It's a steel Team Fuji from back in the day (80's?). The components are Shimano 600--whatever that is--so I'll just assume they were top-of-the-line at the time this bike was born.

I bought it on eBay in 2003 for $200. Since then I put only a couple thousand miles on it, put some new tires and cables and housing on it and had it overhauled recently. It's a good bike but it never fit me well. Now, I don't understand bicycle or eBay economics at all, so how much do you think I should expect for this thing?

I can't say for sure but I'd watch this auction, it looks similar. Maybe you could also list it on craigslist at $200/OBO? It looks like a decent bike in good condition so hopefully you can get at least half of what you paid for it.

yea i would agree. On Ebay it can really fluctuate. As someone who was checking that site while trying to find a bike i say you could get anywhere from 200-300 for it. You could always start the bidding at something like 99.99 then hope it goes up and set a buy it now price of something you don't really expect like 500 just in case someone decides that bike is the one. Ebay also has a best offer price which allows sellers like you to listen to offers while the auction is going on, if you like theyre offer and don't think the bids will surpase it and you accept it, the auction ends i believe.
It really depends on the market and what someone is looking to spend.
Plus shipping may play a large roll in someone's decision as well.

If I were you I would try Craigslist first instead of Ebay.  Its free and you would be dealing with local people instead of trying to ship it.  I just sold my 1989 Schwinn Tempo with 125 components on it, all original except for tires, computer and pedals for $125 and I had a ton of interest.  Mainly college students looking for a cheap reliable bike.  Your bike looks nicer than mine so I don't think $200 is out of the question.

Also if I remember right, the Shimano 600s were the same as the Ultegras are now, above the 125s and below Dura Ace.

Don't sell it, its a nice bike. You can:

A) Leave as-is, add lights and fenders and you have a nice winter bike

B) Convert it to a fixed or single

Unless the fit is really bad, I would convert it to a fixie and ride it.

Otherwise I would list it on Craigslist as a potential fixie at $200 OBO. There's a pretty vibrant fixed gear community in Seattle, and I think it would sell quickly.

Correct, the 600 line was renamed/replaced by Ultegra

I hate to hijack this thread, but I've seen tons of fixed gears on Ebay. I'm a total newb so I don't understand why anybody would want to ride a "fixie".

Please enlighten me.

It's just the current trend. Minimalist bikes are in fashion among hipsters, and a fixed-gear bike doesn't have derailleurs or as many cables and has 0-1 brake usually.

People in triathlon are becoming increasingly interested in fixies because they're supposed to improve your pedal stroke because you have to spin faster in order to move the bike faster. And because triathlon bikes require too much TLC to be ridden in bad weather.

I think it would be a shame for this bike to become a fixie, because its components are in good condition. Fixies should be built up from a bare frame you find in the dumpster. A perfectly good bike should never be stripped down to a fixie.

Converting this bike to a fixed or single is a minimal investment. It would give him another kind of bike with a different purpose. It's not like he has to throw the shifters and derailleurs in the trash.

Skip ebay as everyone is already telling you. Use Craigslist instead or put an add in the local paper.

I would probably except to get $150-200 for it... the components are old and outdated, and the frame is nothing special. But someone looking for a functional bike on the cheap would probably jump on it. Seriously, if you get $150 for it and only paid $200 and put a few thousand miles on it... that is not a whole lot of cost to you per mile....

IMHO, you'll be lucky to get $100 for it, unless someone is looking for that model Fuji for nostalga reasons.

I wish I could get a bike like that for $200. People here are trying to sell Centurion Ironman Dave Scott editions (similar to your Fuji - steel frame, shimano 600) for $400 here.
