Pre-race routine:

We got to the Race sight at about 6:15, which meant nearly 4 hours of waiting for the race to start. Brian and I were in the same group so we got to hang out for a while which helped the time pass. He was in an earlier wave so after he left, I had about an hour to hang out and collect my thought. I just kept thinking, "this is the NYC Marathon!!!!"
Event warmup:

None, I decided that I didn't want to use any extra energy and I used the first mile as a warm up.

Comments:

The race was tough. Perhaps the marathon was harder than I thought it would be and it is way harder than an HIM in my opinion. One thing I learned was that it isn't simply two half marathons.

Again, I didn't stick to my plan (37:00 run 3:00 walk and repeat) you'd think I would have learned my lesson by now. It was just that the first nine miles were great. I felt good, the miles were flying by and I had tons of energy.

When I got to mile 15, I started to get really tired... my legs were feeling it. But, I was excited to know that I would see Cindy and my parents once I got over the Queensboro bridge. I was pumped to see them and it meant the world to me that they were there. It was great.

After mile 17, things started to go downhill. I don't think I ran one mile under 11:00. Not fast!
What would you do differently?:

Stick to the plan... don't know if that would have translate to a better time though, and when it is all said and done, does that really matter?
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of walking. This was my only gripe about the race. I purposely didn't check a bag so I wouldn't have to go to the trucks in Central Park to get it. But, they make you walk to them anyway in a huge crowd, like cattle. I couldn't exit the park until 77th st. and my family was at 59th, so, a lot of walking... and eating.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm SLOW!!

Event comments:

If you would have told me 4 years ago when I was 255lbs that I would even start a marathon, I would have said you were crazy!

I ran the NYC Marathon!! I am a marathon finisher!!

My time goal was 4:35... not even close to that but my real goal was to enjoy the experience, take it all in and be able to walk and smile after it was over, and I nailed that one!

This is an amazing race and I would strongly suggest that everyone do it at least once... it is the experience of a lifetime. Running through the streets and over the bridges of the city I love is amazing.

OVERALL, IT WAS A GREAT DAY!! One that I will never forget regardless of my finishing time.

Course: Amazing course, amazing experience! One of the best experiences of my life. I am so happy that I waited for the NYC marathon to be my first marathon instead of LI. The atmosphere is unbelievable! There were tons of people on the course cheering us on. I just don't have the words. Simply amazing!

It's all about getting what you want out of your races, and you always seem to.

Congrats on a great accomplishment.

Does this mean you're a runner now?

Dude, yes - you are officially a runner, whether you like it or not!

It sounds like you had the time of your life.  I was hoping you would've shared a little more about your experience in the last 10k of the marathon.

Outstanding job!  It was fun tracking you.  How about me, you and Charlie do the Long Island full mary together

Yesterday was my 4th NYC - 7th marathon overall.  My PR in NY is about 30 mins slower than non-NYC.

So, consider yourself a runner!!!!!  NYC is a TOUGH race.  The course, the logistics, the crowds.  Try a non-NYC marathon.  It's still a tough distance, but honestly, it is easier.

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!
