Pre-race routine:

Got up around 5:30 and choked down 2 mini bagels with peanut butter and some water. Then headed to T1 with master mechanic Tommy (tzmitch). It was my first time racing with a disc cover and aero wheel so I was a little nervous about all the new gadgets. Tommy was there to provide moral and technical support. Thank goodness! I got my bike all set up and realized I had not put on my timing chip so I would have to go back to the house and get it. Since my wave did not start until 8:40, that was not a problem.
Had T1 set up by 6:45 so I headed back to the house to hang out until closer to the swim start. It was very cold outside and I had no interest in hanging around outside for 2 hours until my swim start. Unfortunately, I didn't realize just how cold it was until later!

Went back to the house, found my timing chip and hung with the family until almost 8pm. Caught a ride to the swim start at 8pm.
Event warmup:

Once at the swim start location, I hung out with Heather (countregirl) and Mel and tried to keep warm!
Swim
  • 30m 6s
  • 2078 yards
  • 01m 27s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt pretty good about this swim. My navigation was very good for the first half of the swim, I swam straight from buoy to buoy. But once we turned toward the Sea Path marina, I felt unsure. The navigation buoys were to the far left of the channel but most everyone seemed to be swimming to the far right. So I swam straight down the middle of the channel. I doubt it made much difference.

I still got the the ladder in under 30 minutes; which was my goal. This was my first race with a wetwuit stripper and it was awesome! It definitely beats stumbling around t1 by myself.
What would you do differently?:

Might consider wearing booties next time. My feet were so cold I could barely run to t1. It was like running on nails! ouch!
Transition 1
  • 04m 42s
Comments:

I got to T1 and my hands were so cold that I couldn't get my socks or shoes on b/c I couldn't feel my fingers. I finally got socks, shoes, arm warmers and helmet on and took off.
What would you do differently?:

Pay better attention to the weather and put on more clothes!!
Bike
  • 2h 52m 41s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.46 mile/hr
Comments:

Other than the fact that I froze my A$$ off for the first hour, this was a great ride. I passed a lot of people and was only passed by one female on the entire ride.
Since this was my first HIM, I decided to go out pretty conservative and stay in the low range of my goal power zone. But once we hit the turn around and I realized I was in the top 10 overall, I decided to pick it up a bit. I felt really strong on the way back and ended up negative splitting the ride by 4 minutes.

What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 03m 7s
Comments:

Handed my bike and helmet to the volunteers and took off for the port-a-john. OMG! I've never been so happy to see a port-a-john in my life. My bladder was about to explode!
Once that was taken care of, I was good to go and the legs seemed to be cooperating.
What would you do differently?:

Take off my arm warmers.
Run
  • 2h 05m 44s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 36s  min/mile
Comments:

This was a good run for me. I thought going in that 2:05 was the best I could expect to do and that's was I did. I stuck to my game plan and walked each aid station while I sipped water. I took a gel at miles 2, 6 & 10 and decided to start taking endurolytes when i looked down and saw my black trisuit covered with white salt. I am especially proud of my mental game. I broke the run down into manageable segments and kept myself moving forward. It also helped that a volunteer told me, at mile 3, that I was the 9th overall female. I knew I was going to be run down by a few girls but I held out hope that I could still podium. That was really good motivation to keep moving forward!
As expected, the last 2 miles were quite painful. I just kept telling myself that I could do this for 20 more minutes. That was a LONG 20 minutes!

What would you do differently?:

Learn to run faster.
Post race
Warm down:

The last mile of the run was excruciating and I was kind of fuzzy when I crossed the finish line. Luckily, Spot was sitting right near the finish line which gave me a good excuse to collapse to the ground. Then Kapinto came over and we were introduced. Turns out we had run into the Battleship area together and not even known it! Small world.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Running is still my weakness. I've really got to work at that this winter. Other than that, I had a great race. To win 1st Master Female in my first HIM is pretty special. Should I quit while I'm ahead? ;)

Event comments:

Great race! The only complaint was transportation to and from the Battleship. Standing in line for 1.5+ hours waiting for a water taxi is ridiculous. They'll have to figure something else out for next year. Other than that, it was a blast.

Congrats on an awesome race. Hate that I missed you all weekend. With you on that run thing, going to focus a lot on that this winter. They mentioned several times about putting buses on next year for transportation. So your doing the full next year?

Lady, that was one awesome performance! I am glad you got in this race. Good to see I was not the only one with cold-finger issues in T1! Congratulations on that 1st place.

You'll never know how much you picked me up on my 2nd lap! If it makes you feel any better, there was no one in line for the water taxi at 10:30 pm. Hope to see you lots next year!

As I said before "You are the master!"  Top masters female overall WOO HOO!  Great race!  That is a heck of a first 1/2.  You have mastered the mental game which I think is so important in the longer races (1/2 and full)  Now time to recover and work on the offseason
