So I got into the NYC Triathlon. Should I start booking a hotel room now? And where in the city should I find a place? Where is transition? I figure I should get something near there?

I stayed at Park 79. VERY small hotel, but clean and the best part it was only $189.00 !

It's only a few blocks to transition.

The NYC Hilton is the "official" hotel, so I'd at least check their rates before you look elsewhere. Transition is at 72nd and West End, so you'll want to try to be on the Upper West Side.

I'm also curious about people's advice for this. I live in the city and while this is my first year competing, I've had friends in this race for the past three years. This year, there are five of us, including three out-of-towners.

Since my friends have so far been locals, we've just left from our homes -- from 125th street to 23rd. Ridden bikes to and from transition on Saturday and after the race; subway or cab around early Sunday morning. No one has had problems, and my initial suggestion was that it doesn't make a huge difference where you stay. But it made me think -- with three new people coming in, should we be making sure they have somewhere nearby to stay?

There aren't any hotels that are super-close to transition, so no matter where you stay, you're going to wind up riding or taking the train. So, I suppose it doesn't really matter where you stay. I guess you'd want to try to stay somewhere that's convenient to the 1,2, or 3 train, since that's the closest subway to transition. I think getting out of transition after the race, you're best off taking the train. Trying to get out of there in a car would be a nightmare I would imagine. When I took the train to the race on Sunday morning at around 3am, practically the only other people on the subway were other triathletes.

I slept on the couch in the office next to mine this past year and took a cab over from 59th & Park.  Had no problem getting dropped off, the trick is to not try to go North near the West Side Drive b/c the close off the Henry Hudson and all traffic is pushed on to this side street.  I was able to jump out a few blocks from 72nd St. and walk over without a glitch.

Check out the Beacon on 75th and Broadway. One the Ave on 77th btwn Amsterdam and columbus. There is one more on 77th and broadway but I can't remember the name of it. If you google search hotels upper west side NYC you should come up with a few options.

I am sure we all got the same email, But the Sheraton NY has reservations for Racers and Families starting Feb 1.

Does anyone else plan on staying there, and any thoughts/opinions on staying there??

My wife and i are thinking of staying over Definately Sat, and possibly Fri and Sat, just so it will be easy to get around, instead of driving down both days and dealing with all the issues. Besides i am sure there will be some meet and greets so it will be much more convenient.
