Swim
Comments: I lined up far right in the front row, the crowd was a bit thinner over there and I really dislike the getting pummeled bit. This was an excellent idea, I swam straight toward the turn buoy and while I was surrounded by people, never felt jostled. The draft was easy to find and pulled me around the buoy with almost no effort to turn. The short back stretch was significantly more crowded but I still managed to avoid serious blows. Again, around the buoy with no effort (I was a bit to the outside...). The second lap was the same, I quickly found a pack to swim in, maintained my wide turn and had no problems. My level of effort was very low, in fact, I was only breathing every 3rd or 5th stroke without any trouble. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Transition 1
Comments: I didn't run, coach says no running in transition, so I walked fast. The peelers were speedy and easy, the rinse was adequate, and my bag was handed to me. The tent was warm and I found a chair quickly, but didn't sit. No sitting. I was smooth and slow, which we all know means fast! Well, relatively I guess. I packed only what I knew I needed, nothing extra, nothing just in case. It made it easy, no thinking, just touch every item one time and put it on. Had to get my own bike, and the mount line was very crowded but it all came together. What would you do differently?: maybe move quicker? Bike
Comments: I'm just plain slow and the pelatons/pace lines were blowing by me for the first hour. I was also freezing for the first two, which will explain my later bathroom stops-I wasn't sweating. I stayed on my plan with the only significant change being two bathroom stops both on the side of the road (I'm not waiting for a portopotty!!). I carried two fuel bottles and some fig newtons and picked up water along way, so I skipped special needs. I stayed comfortable and did not take any risks with pace. I had hoped for better speed, but was also worried about the run. I'd predicted about 6:30 so this was pretty close. What would you do differently?: Maybe take more risks with pace, and not fall over at the cone turn around (embarrassing!!!) Transition 2
Comments: They took my bike, I walked the long path to the tent and did the same pattern as before-nothing extra in the bag, touch everythign once and put it on. Walking only!! What would you do differently?: move my arse a bit quicker Run
Comments: Again, followed my plan. Ran from aid station to aid station, drank water at each, at a pretzel or two at each, gel every four miles and chicken broth for the second half. I felt good enough to run harder but have done enough marathons to know that the blow up can come at any time. When the first half was done at 1:11 I thought about pushing and reminded myself that 13.1 tells you nothing, this could all crash at 15. It didn't, but that fear was with me until mile 23!! I was able to see Jake at the stripper house, along with my coach. He played me some terrible hair band music to motivate me (and embarrass me too!!) and ran along side for a couple of minutes. It was the park that got me at dark, I was losing motivation and had talk myself into running between the aid stations. I also stopped to pee again!! This never happens! With two to go, I knew I was home free and could come in under 12:30. The finish was the most excited I've ever been about finishing any race and you couldn't pull the smile off my face. What would you do differently?: push the pace a bit Post race
Warm down: Jake handed my a Genny Cream Ale for my picture, which I promptly cracked and drank. Gathered my stuff, chattered my head off, ate a whole pizza and fell asleep on the couch at 9:30. What limited your ability to perform faster: unwilling to risk Last updated: 2008-06-09 12:00 AM

Other than panic? Very short swims and bikes in the two days prior, 330 calories of fig newton at 1:30AM, 500 calories of oatmeal, banana and brown sugar at 4:00AM and a diet coke.
Again, other than panic? I called my coach 15 minutes prior to the start to ask for the secret. She said get in and swim.
