Subject: Running philosophy

This may get moved to COJ, but during my lunch workout, I heard some guys in the gym talking about running. Their philosophy:

"If I run one mile, I can drink one beer. If I run 5, then 5 beers..."

Kind of made me laugh. I don't put a lot of miles in per week (avg about 10-15 a week), but i know some of you put upwards of 70mpw into the logs...

70 miles, 70 beers...

opens up a whole new aspect of the marathon. there was a time when it would be easier for me to drink a case of beer than run 26.2, but I think those days are gone.

70 miles, 70 beers...

That would kinda defeat the purpose of running. As one of the people logging around 70 mpw, I can say with certainty I would have no desire to drink that many beers. I have maybe 4-6 beers a week at most.

So, is there a mythical 70 mpw, 70 beers person out there? 10 beers a day to go with the 10 miles a day.

I can't drink a beer anymore unless I feel I have earned it. I think my mile to beer ratio is about 20. I use it as a form of motivation.

Usually a race or a long workout earns me a beer or two in the hot tub. It has to be premium imported beer though as I figure if I worked this hard for it I am going to drink my favorite.

Curious what others favorite beers are.

Bitburger

That seems to be in line with a lot of the college students I see around campus. However that philosophy just isn't going to fly with me. I'll sub in chocolate for beer and call it good however.

Not really. Given a flat road, no head wind or tail wind it takes "about" .75 cal per pound to travel one mile. So for me at 260 I will burn "about" 195 cal/mile and the beer I'm drinking right now works out to be about 266 cal/pint.
So even my fat can't do beer/mile and not endup on the wrong end of that one.

From what I tasted beer tastes worst thant he Gazpacho I just made for Spanish Class.  However since im 16 i can not say per beer.  But per soda.  During high drinking periods I'll go through one 12 pack about every three weeks to a month.  Other times just chocolate milk and my mornnig glass of OJ.

ooh I love a good IPA, haven't had one in ages.  We have a brewary/pub/restaurant about 20 mins drive away called Little Creatures (because where it's housed used to be a crocodile farm) and they have the most wonderful Pale Ale, they have also just introduced a new cider which is way, way too easy to drink on a hot day.   Am meeting my sister near there for fish & chips tonight, which begs the question, how many miles equals a good battered snapper and a mountain of chips?

BigDH - 2008-11-06 1:55 PM I have thought such things, problems is: Running makes me want to drink beer, drinking beer makes me not want to run.

This is the most true statement I've ever read.  It's a vicious cycle.

I am therefore I enjoy a cold one (run or beer!).

Cool thread.  I'm staying light these days because there have been way too many bottles in the recycle bin the last few weeks. Laughing

From my blog today:

"AM run. Short run for the week and pushed the effort more w/o a HRM.  Could tell I was a bit dehydrated, after 25 min I became thirsty.  Three Chichelob Ultra Amber's last night must have done it to me!"

"I didn't realize that Chichelob Ultra Ambers had such a nice 3.3:1 Carb to Protein ratio!!!Laughing  "

Michelob ULTRA Amber
With a beautiful amber color, this beer blends the aromas of 2-row black and caramel malts with U.S grown Willamette and European hops giving it a full, rich taste and clean hop finish.

ABV 5.0%, 114 calories, 3.7g carbs, 1.1g protein and 0.0g fat, per 12 oz bottle.

I read this thing awhile back (can't find the link now) about some university student (I think it was in the UK) who did 100 beers and ran 100 miles in something like 7 or 10 days.  Seems like something to strive for.  And if I recall correctly he did it during their exams week.  Hope he passed.

sounds characteristic of a Briton. Man, those guys don't screw around with their beer. Much respect from me.

Pretty easy to find in the stores:

Sapporo
New Castle (my new favorite)
Widmer Bros Hefeweizen

As far as the calories go, you are all wrong. The correct formula is:

1 mile = 1 pound of bacon

hmmmm baaaaaaaacon.
