Subject: Why are you doing it?

So after I run finish my first half-marathon I was bragging around about it for a while. Most people were like "wow!" "amazing", "congrats!" But there was one of my friend who said "running 13 mile? WHY?" to my surprise, I can't answer his question... It has been in my head for a while "why am I doing this?"

It doesn't bother me much as I continue to train and it seems like part of my life style.  But I like to know why you guys doing tri? Do you have any reasons doing it?

because it feels so good when I stop?

On a serious note, every time I run or ride by someone in a wheelchair I realize why I do it

To do what others can't.

Edit: I guess actually it's because at one time I couldn't.

When I did my first Half marathon a woman at work asked "What about the other half?" She thought I cheated

As Eric Harr says in his book, everyone longs to be a hero. And unless you happen to come across a house on fire, or someone drowning in a lake, there aren't too many opportunities to be a hero in this world. Completing a triathlon really is an achievement that makes you feel heroic.

???

I've felt a lot of things in triathloning. but never "heroic." How so?

ETA: Courage and daring? Supremely noble or self-sacrificing? Of impressive size, power, extent, or effect?  Nope, not feeling it.

Main Entry: 1he·ro·ic  Pronunciation: \hi-'ro-ik also her-'o- or he-'ro-\ Variant(s): also he·ro·ical  \-i-k?l\ Function: adjective Date: 1549
1: of, relating to, resembling, or suggesting heroes especially of antiquity
2 a: exhibiting or marked by courage and daring b: supremely noble or self-sacrificing
3 a: of impressive size, power, extent, or effect heroic voice> b (1): of great intensity : extreme <heroic effort> (2): of a kind that is likely only to be undertaken to save a life <heroic surgery>
4: of, relating to, or constituting drama written during the Restoration in heroic couplets and concerned with a conflict between love and honor

I'm addicted to the endorphines!  I like to throw in an occasional race because even in my 40s...I am still competitive...although considerably slower than in my 30s.
