Looks like several of us have the same plan going.  When I originally signed up for Oceanside I wasn't planning on an IM.   Now, with IMAZ at the end of the year my goal is to just enjoy (is that possible?) the HIM and finish.  I've been getting decent swim workouts in, moderate runs, but really lacking on the bike training while it's been cold.   I'll get some good mileage in over the next 2 months, but really just looking foward to a long base build over the summer.

Farewell everyone...    as I have gotten hopelessly behind in my swimming and with the turmoil at work  (I am a Sr. VP in Citi Smith Barney) I just don't see being ready in April for the swim portion.  So rather than be a frustrated loon and risk a disaster at the event, I am going to push the HIM off a couple of months and get it right...

I look forward to seeing those of you I know at other events and meeting the rest of you someday... But sadly, it will not be on April 4th...

Training is going reasonably well.  I'm starting to add a little swim volume back in after letting it drop off over the past few months.  I need to get some race-distance or longer rides in regularly starting soon, but my cycling feels pretty good right now.  Running would be better if I had a warm enough pool to move a couple run sessions to aquajogging.  I've found that trying to aquajog in a full wetsuit doesn't work out so well -- so everything is on the t-mill right now and my knee isn't super happy about that.

hey guys,
feeling good, trying to train hard, still following the 20 week plan, do have to twik for work, and added a 10k run last weekend, 20sec per mile faster then last year (sweet), feel sore as hell today (due to only being on the elliptical and treadmill). Still feel that the run will be the weakest point. Well, I hope your all doing well and lets get back to working out (that means you Hans, LOL).

Greetings All,

My first Half too. I talked by brother into entering the race so there will be two of us. Neither of us has done a half before. He hasn't done a tri in year.

We don't live in the same state, so training together isn't happening either.

Like EricD, I'm shooting for a 6-7 hour finish. Been on the 20 week plan from the site here and think it will do me well.

Cheers,
-Craig-

My training is coming along well (aside from a little P3C meets GMC Yukon accident this past weekend in Huntington Beach that necessitated a replacement of my carbon base bar).

I've been getting in at least one 56 miler on the bike every week, plus a two mile OWS (along with a few shorter ones).  Thus far I've neglected my road running, but I've still been putting in 8 miles/45 mins a night on the elliptical trainer to compensate.  I'll up the cycling/running in a few weeks when there's still some daylight left after work.  I'm feeling pretty good as it gets nearer.  I've got a pretty ambitious time goal in sight, but I won't state it until I pound the pavement a little and ensure that my run base is where it should be.

Only 10 weeks to go...

I will, I will. Been working 14 to 18 hour days from Sunday through Thursday. Our Government Jet broke down before take off, so will not be coming home until Friday.   Very sad as family is waiting. Keep it up kwfire, you're doing awesome.

Training is going well, I'm keeping on track with the training plan. Being my first HIM I feel pretty good but sometimes worry that I won't have enough base for this race. Any thoughts from people who have raced this course before. Anything you wish you had worked on ?

As you probably already know, it's a challenging course.  On the bike, there are the hills, but there can also be a lot of wind.  There are some rollers on the first part and ideally you'd try to even out your power output by making sure you put in some effort on the downhills and not trying to totally hammer on the uphills.  On the run, a lot of it is on trails and you also may have to contend with heat, so hill, trail, and heat training would be beneficial.  So be prepared for a challenging bike segment and a challenging run.  Other than that, it's pretty straightforward

Unless they changed the run course it was all on roads, except for a short distance in the sand when I did it in 2006. Has that changed? I don't know where there would be trails since it is right along the coast so unless the run has dramatically changed in the past few years it was all streets going slightly up and slightly downhill the entire time with a couple steep parts when transitioning from the beach level road to the next road up.

I did this race last year as my first HIM, and I should have put more miles on my bike before the race , after 50 miles I just wanted to be off the saddle ! The first big hill on the bike comes after about 30 miles .The run is mostly on the road, last year there was a bit of dirt, (maybe 20 feet) where there was some construction, but the run is relatively flat.

Did it also last year. The beach run section is now gone. They have repaved some sections and re-doing the bridge. Last two years, it was all paved. No beach. Hilly run course, just spend time in the saddle. As Ken said it, bike section feels great for the first 30 miles, but that back section can be a killer. 3 hills, and the second one is the worst and longest. Then of course you have those last few miles that are typically head winds till you get to the transition. Overall great course. Just make sure ou all place a few 50+ bike rides before the race. It can feel long.

Please provide more details! As mentioned above, are non members welcomed, and will it include the inside part of the course where the hills are, or just the beach side of the course, where start/finish, etc... Run is easy to know as it is all open. Thanks.

I was going to post this, but figured someone actually doing the race and in LA tri would, so sax took care of that.  \

What I know, yes, non members are allowed.  It is the full 56 mile course including the backside.  I have no idea on whose permission it is granted, or how they are going to monitor it, but I am planning on doing the ride and a loop of the run.  It is 2/28, not sure of the time, but it's not super early.  Meeting is at the boat ramp, I believe.

Looking forward to meeting you all.

I will be the slow guy on the fast bike.

Below are the details as of right now...

--------------------------------------------------------------

Hey gang,

This is just a preliminary email to let you know that there will be a group of us pre-riding/running the Oceanside 70.3 bike and run course on Saturday, February 28th.  We have been given special permission to  ride through Camp Pendleton and wanted to share this opportunity with you. Course information is here: www.ironmancalifornia.com/course.php

If you are planning to do the event this year or just want a fun training day, feel free to come out and join us! We will be meeting somewhere near the boat ramp/parking lot in Oceanside Harbor (this is where the transition area is for the actual event) at 9:00-9:15am, departing SHARP at 9:30am. Please plan on at least a 2 hour drive from Santa Monica, or plan accordingly depending on where you live so you are not late. More specific details and information will be emailed closer to the date.

We will be riding the full 56 mile bike course, including the ride through Camp Pendleton (ALL riders will be required to have PHOTO ID on them. NO EXCEPTIONS!!). We will then head back to transition to do ONE loop (approx 6.4 miles) of the run course (you may do two loops  if you wish, it's your call ;-). Depending on everyone's speed, this training day can be from 5-7 hours. Please feel free to bring non-members as well who may want to join and we should have several levels participating.

NOTE: Because this is NOT a coached workout or a formal organized training event, it is required that everyone bring their own nutrition, gear, extra tubes, etc. All riders have the responsibility to be experienced enough to follow the route slip and course info that will be sent out in a separate email closer to the date (or just  look at above link provided). There will be riders who have done this race before and who will know the route, but just in case, it's best to plan on buddying up for the ride, and/or attaching the course info to your bike.

More details to follow as we confirm details regarding entrance to Camp Pendleton, along with anything else that will be required. But SAVE THE DATE if you would like to participate.

Stella Tong

I thought that pre-riding the backside of the course was a huge no-no, specifically for safety reasons. If they do allow it for this one day, I imagine a ton of people from So Cal to come out.

The flatter, first half is open to anyone with ID to get in the base.

Getting back into the training groove with the warmer weather.   Swim and run's been going well over the winter, but bike's really been lacking.   Going to resolve that over the next two months.
