Just wanted to see if anyone here is doing Augusta 70.3.  I am not signed up yet, but will be soon.  It will be my first HIM.

I am torn between Augusta 70.3 and the South Carolina Half. I think they were scheduled on the same weekend this year. I think I will stay local in 2009 to cut costs. I like that I can sleep in my own bed the night before but Augusta isn't totally out of the question as of yet.

 Short answer: Not sure yet

September 27

I heard it is real close, if not the same date as the SC HIM.

I figured since it was my first one, I would pay a little more and go with all the excitement that I've heard goes along with the IM run events.  Next year, will be SC for me due to cost.

I live in North Augusta, SC so I'm definitely in for this race.  Check out the thread in the GA forum- there are a lot of GA Bt'ers registered for this race!!

I'm in in Simpsonville and I just signed up for it last week! It will be my first HIM as well, and I can't wait.

BTW this is my first post on the BT forum although I have been lurking for almost a year. Now I feel like a part of it.

Looks like the HIMs for 2009 in our local area are lining up like this:

27 Sep Augusta, SC
24 Oct SC Half
7 Nov Beach to Battleship, Wilmington, NC

I want to do one of them, just don't know which one. Wilmington will probably sell out within the week.

Anyone know when the Kiawah Island Olympic Triathlon will be this year?

just to clarify ... the SC Half is on the 4th of October not the 24th - important if you're looking to do a half in your buildup for the B2B full!

I'm registered for the Augusta race. I really wanted to go back and do the SC Half but the extra week between Augusta and B2B is better for IM prep. Since B2B is an A race this year I have to go with what's best for preparation. For what it's worth, qualifying for Clearwater didn't enter the equation. To me, the reports of mass drafting make a mockery of it being a "World Championship". If I happen to qualify for Clearwater at Augusta I will go (even though I would be shelled from B2B), but that is not the goal for doing the race. If all things were equal I would support my local race and Setup Events as they are a great company and supporter of local charities and triathlon in the southeast!

swimshaddy, You are correct about the 4 Oct date for the SC HIM! I think I mis-typed. The Kiawah Island Olympic Tri is 20 Sep. That is my local Oly which makes Augusta only one week later too close for me to enter. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the B2B HIM. Hated to have to commit this far out, but the post race reviews for the inaugural B2B this last Nov were so glowing and positive, I just had to sign up before it sold out. I suppose I could also do the SC HIM on the 4th now. I've not entered any Setupevents, but it sounds like they are a solid company and put on a good event. Good luck on the IM!

I could be wrong, but I do'nt think any Setup Events races open for registration until January anyway...  And they do put on great races.  I've never had any problems with early sell outs either, aside from the SC Half.

To the OP, I'll be there should funds allow.  I've got IMFL on the same day as most people 'round here have B2B.

I just moved back to South Carolina and I did not know Augusta had a half. How is it compared to Greenwoods half? Being they are so close Im not sure which one to do. I have done the Greenwood course before so something different might be in order.

This is the first year the the Augusta race is being held.  I did the SC Half in Greenwood this year.  It was very well run by Setup Events.  The bike and run courses were both rolling hills.  I'd expect the same in Augusta.  The main thing here is the Ironman name in Augusta... but you'll pay a bit more to get it.

I think I'll be doing Augusta because its one week earlier.  I'm racing ironman Florida in November and want the extra week between races.

I live in Augusta and can tell you that the 70.3 run course is pancake FLAT.    Also, the Augusta bike course has some hills, but most of them are in the beginning of each loop.  I'm not a huge fan of hills but I don't think the hills on the bike course are all that bad.  The Augusta 70.3 should have some fast race times and will be a good race to PR at!

Sweet, thanks for the info.  Should be a fast course indeed!

I just registered yesterday!  I'll be there!

My two cents...I would take my training and racing planning/timing into consideration, but all things equal there I would definitely support the local event over the Ironman event. The entry fee is $100 cheaper and the guys at Setup Events do a superb job at producing any event. Don't get sucked into the marketing genius of the NAS events unless it's the right race at the right time for you.

Btw, I will be doing one of the NAS events in 2010 because it's the right race at the right time.

FWIW, for us here in Augusta, the 70.3 *is* the local event, especially since PEM is putting the race on in association with the Greater Augusta Sports Council.
