Subject: RE: Hanging a bike on the wall?

nickcach - 2008-11-10 10:38 AM I just purchased a new bike and now have 2 to store in 957 sqft of condo. I would like to hang one one the wall. Should I just go to home depot and get hooks or is there someone else you can recommend that is better? Help is appreciated.

They make some racks that are specifically made to hang a bike (or two) on a wall.  You can get them at a lot of places or on-line.  They also have a gravity stand (if you don't want to put major holes in your wall) that sits up snug to the wall and holds two bikes, but doesn't need support (engineers are kind of awesome).  They are less than $100.  The thing about hanging on the wall is that you have to mount them in a stud or put large anchors in your wall or you will have a bike with a piece of drywall attached laying on the floor.

I was just in a similar situation, but needed to hang my bike from its back wheel on the wall (the wall in my hallway was not long enough to hang the bike horizontally)

In the end I used this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009JQRYA
with this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000LXA9WA

The hook is long enough to keep the pedals off the wall, and the rail has enough fixing points that you are not relying on one piece of drywall. Worked fine so far.

There are a whole bunch of other types of bike specific hooks / racks if you've got room to store the bike horizontally though.

we have a very do-it-yourself mechanism, that was also very cheap.

1) find some studs in the wall you want the bikes hung

2) screw a two-by-four horizontally across the wall into the studs

3) hang as many hooks as you want across the 2x4 to hang as many bikes as you can fit from the wheel.

it's awesome, it's cheap, and it's "expandable".  we had 3 bikes and a spare wheel up on our wall until the husband sold one of the bikes.

I've attached a (bad) picture so you can get an idea.

We have one of these and it's great. We looked at two different brands and bought a "Bike Tree" model. Really like it.

Really, really, need to anchor to a stud (or more, depending on how you are hanging the bikes). Used to hang one bike in a small apartment, above a desk: Just bought two large gauge rubber (or is it vinyl?) coated screw hooks and screwed them into adjacent studs, then hung bike by top tube.

When I was in college, I hung my mountain bike from the ceiling.  Just used two hooks fastened into the studs.  I had such little space, that I hung it over my bed!!  A bit scary the first night, but I got used to it.

Did it make you faster when you slept under it?  Sorta like putting a book under your pillow to get smarter?

Cool

You could set it up like my shop did with my new road ride. They have about 6 of these in the road room where they display their "unobtanium" level of bikes. I like the art work theme of the frame.

I use the 2 bike version.  It has a shelf for shoes and helmets as well.

wow Freeswimmingfish, I love it, bikes as art, I particularly like your juxtaposition with the Eiffel Tower.  Still some bikes cost as much as a Picasso.....

Mine hangs from my ceiling in my apartment just over the kitchen table, two hooks from the local hardware store into the ceiling studs.

It's the opposite in my house. It's a new-ish house and not decorated at all. When I got my new bike I told my husband I wanted to hang it on the blank wall in our bedroom as art. He said absolutely not Now much to his dismay it lives in the dining room, but he seems to have come to terms with that.

eta: misspellings, oops!

Lisazapato - thanks so much for posting your method. I now have a similar one, built this weekend for less than 5 bucks.

Awesome!!!  Looks great, and glad to be of service .  Isn't it an awesome combination of functional and cheap??

One thing I would note, I can't quite tell from the pic so I'll just say it just in case, is to be careful the hook is not touching any wheel spokes, this puts pressure on it and can affect the true of your wheel.

Yep, awesome combo - especially the cheap part.

I wondered about issues of wheel true. I double checked and made sure that the hooks weren't touching any spokes.
