When my oldest son was about 8 yrs old he said "like" constantly. We got rid of it by saying the word "kumquat" (which he found hilarious!) every time he said "like". Worked LIKE a charm....and it resulted in a lot of giggles.

That worked for us too...my youngest got to calling me Mamma (we are in the south, but still - I'm not a Mamma)...so we call her a different, funny name when she says it - she giggles, we giggle, and there is less Mamma going on.

I draw attention to it and it seems to go away.

For example, DD says "I was like sitting here and then he went like that."

I respond "Were you like sitting, or were you sitting?"

She fixes it and goes on.  After throwing those into the conversation here and there (not overdoing it), she seems to understand we don't speak that way.

Sit the child down and let them know you will not acknowledge them if they use "like" in the manner you wish to not hear. I had the problem with "Huh?" at my house. Took about 4 times and they stopped saying it. The little buggers are smart, they will learn and adapt rapidly at that age.

p>Next step is that when my son tisks when I say something I get to punch him (not hard so don't call CPS on me)  He knows when he does it and ever alerts me when I missed some so I get to still punch him

I look forward to the day I can take a friendly jab at my sons.

Only dads with sons would understand...

That is so not true.

My dad and I wrassle and punch each other all the time when we're together. My mother looks at us, rolls her eyes, and says, "Children!" Then we laugh...and continue wrassling/punching.
