kuotaguy - 2009-05-04 7:54 PM 79 degrees would feel really nice. But I was counting on wetsuit bouyancy to help me through my first ocean swim.

The RD will probably take multiple temperature readings looking for a cooler spot.  It could be 79 in one place and 76 in another.  Hopefully, they can find one a little cooler.

I am sure I will be able to help them find an appropriate sample!

It was suggested to me that we go throw some ice cubes in.

To put some of your fears to rest.....in the six years that I have done this race it has been non wetsuit legal exactly once (and that was the first year). We have had a much milder spring this year than in years past. I would be REALLY surprised if it is not wetsuit legal.

Not to freak anyone out further, but based on my previous gulf coast triathlon experience -- I would be more concerned with the wetsuit being a protective layer from jellyfish stings than for floatation purposes.

*edited to clarify that I mean previous triathlons in the gulf coast area. I have never done a HIM or this race (GCT) in particular.

I think the jellyfish are usually worse leter in the summer. Not positive, but we have been going to the coast during May the last several years and have only seen a couple of jellyfish.

I was swimming this weekend in the bay (not the gulf), and didn't see a single jellyfish.  Fingers crossed!  And by the way, the newspaper today listed the water temp as 77.

I'm packing everything tonight for an Atlanta 1pm departure tomorrow. And the wetsuit's coming with me.
I'm so excited I can hardly hold a thought in my head (though my right IT Band is not as excited).
See you all this weekend! Good Luck and Good Racing!

I can't wait! I'm jumping out of my skin! I'm traveling from Atlanta tomorrow too, hopefully take in some relaxing beach time on Friday.

Is there a group getting together for a short swim on Thursday? Maybe around 4pm at the race starting point? Let me know if anyone is interested or if there is a group already.
Thanks and ROCK-ON triathletes!

I'm sure nobody's watching the weather right? Hah!

Winds will be out of the SW, in our favor for the outbound, plan accordingly for the return/inbound trip for some gusts to around 10-12 mph especially as you move closer to the water. Probably more of a concern for me since my AG (45-49) will be one of the last to start.

Looks like a good day to race...stay hydrated & good luck to all!
