NavyTRIChief - 2008-11-17 8:23 AM  My biggest issue is that the idiot, yes, I feel comfortable calling him that, in charge of the Irwin, had no plan or clear and concise ideas what to do when the inevitible happened. He was all about getting his people onboard to deliver a paper but other than the media, had no grand plan. He placed his people in danger, as you saw when they tried to throw the guy overboard, and when the crew asked what they should do, he sat and thought. It amazed me that he would place others lives in jeopordy and not know what to do when it happened.

I also noticed that. They all sat around not knowing what to do. No real leadership from their captain. There was the one female who was all about the media and he sort of followed that. They couldn't follow, their smaller pursuit boat ran out of fuel as did their helicopter. It seems like his crew is a bunch of young idealists, with no real world nor any experience on the water.

Yeah...I think that's pretty much exactly what they are. I checked out their website and they have an application and details about how to crew for them. No pay...just room and board. So, I'm guessing a combination of experienced seamen and fervent idealist willing to work for nothing is probably pretty hard to come by,

Regardless of the morality of the idiot whalers from Japan, piracy and attempting to foul a ships prop seems like a good way to get killed.

If you're gonna use extreme tactics to stop them, then arm yourselves and sink the damn ship. Endangering lives for a photo op is pretty stupid.

aarondavidson - 2008-11-16 7:10 PM Has anyone here ate Whale? I wonder maybe it is just that good tasting?

yup.  Last time I was in Japan, I ate something that was put in front of me, that one of my coworkers ordered.  When I asked later it was whale bacon.  see link for picture.  The meat was kind of oily and chewy and did not have a whole lot of flavor.  I much prefer the pig to the whale.

Unless you're so committed to a cause that you're willing to lay your life down for it.

I disagree. Like I said, sink the damn ship if you're that committed.

I don't have sympathy for fools who employ stupid tactics, regardless of whether or not I agree with them morally.

The mission they are on is to save whales and raise awareness; not to bring physical harm to the people with whom they disagree. That's why they aren't sinking any ships, I imagine.

I have never eaten whale and never want to eat it. I have a feeling whales may be as smart or smarter than we are, but the lack the opposable thumbs or ability to communicate to make us stop.
