I'm CONSIDERING the Assault on Mt Mitchell ( 102 miles approx. 11,000 ft of climbing).... so I ventured up to Marion and drove the last 25-30 miles of the ride............... ummm..........how do I say this.... WWHOOOAAAA.

The last 3.5 miles of hwy 80 up to the BRP... absolutely stupid hilly.... that's ridiculous..... it runs from about 5% to 20 % grades, avging about 8 %.... THEN you're @ 3300 ft... only another 3300 ft to go... IN ONLY 15 miles.......lol. Yes, the approx. 11 miles on the Parkway is NO JOKE either.... there is one 2.5 mile SCREAMING decent but you know you have to climb it all back...... not good.

I actually got brave and parked at the Ridge Junction Overlook right before the turn off onto Hwy128 for the summit, and cycled to the summit... with a std 53/39 double and a 12-25 ..... pretty much agony. Made it to the summit and then got my "reward" of 40-50 mph decent....... in 50 degree weather.... you do the math.

Suffice to say, Craig is "reconsidering" the ride......lol. I'm sure there are MUCH steeper rides in many places in the world...... but this is CRAZY. I'm not a bad climber but I have a LONG way to go to be able to be even minimally prepared for this. All that climbing comes AFTER having ridden 75 miles from Spartanburg SC to Marion.

Did get a 12-27 installed and a compact crank is next. Hill repeats, hill repeats, and more hill repeats.

I will have been cycling for 2 years next week so this will be quite a stretch goal.

To all who have completed this ride... in ANY time.. I say... you rock !

This ride is very well run, supported, and organized according to everyone I have talked to that has done it.

It absolutely CAN be done...... respect the distance/climbing and train accordingly.

It is some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen.. stunningly so.

Who else is in ?

I don't think I can do a May race due to other stuff going on that month. I am seriously considering Blood Sweat and Gears, tho, which is at the end of June. Maybe we could do a training ride together. I have no idea how to train for a mountain climb century. Do you?

I know I'm going to have to ride like crazy AND climb like crazy for Mitchell.

I don't know specifically how to train for this thing.

We can plan a training ride.

Blood, Sweat, and Gears is no joke either I heard.... train hard Carol !

Craig--you guys need to touch base with Tommy.  He's the only one I know of that has done BSG and I think also Mt Mitchell.  He'd be a great resource for giving you an idea of how you should train.

I did them both. They are very similar in terms of distance and climbing. BSG has Snake Mountain and Mitchell has RT. 80. Personally I found the last two switchbacks on the Snake harder than anything I rode in my life up to that point. But it was some time ago and I was a beginner then.
We also periodically go and ride RT.80 so I am a little bit more familiar with that climb.
I do it with 36/23 low gear.It is a beautiful route from Marion to Parkway.
Weather also can be huge factor for BSG but Mitchell is generally cooler and the top of the mountain is cold!!!!

You climbed 80 with a 36/23 ?.... whoa..... outta my league... my CAR struggled to make it up the last part of that ride. The last 3 miles of 80 before BRP scares the --- out of me. After having driven from Marion to the summit I THINK that's the steepest part, although BRP and 128 are no joke either.

I climbed HWY 128 to summit with a 39/25 ... and I paid for it. Now I have a 12-27 and a 50/34 being delivered... my wimpy a$$ might make it up with that.

We should do some training rides..... if you don't mind waiting for me...

No, I would not mind waiting for you or anybody because there are people who are waiting for me at the top of RT.80 as well. Once you do it couple times it gets easier,tough....
Even if you start with a group, a climb like that usually puts everybody in their own world of hurt and you regroup at the top. You have to climb it at a pace that you can sustain, otherwise you are toast and you might even get off the bike.

Ok... Sat looks like a go....... start @ Tom Johnson camping and ride up 80 to Pkwy then possibly to summit..... it wil only be ridiculously cold, not insane cold, so that's no excuse...

Anyone ?

headed to Marion this am.... "cool" day forecasted on summit today... 43 deg and winds @ 10-20 gusting to 30.. woohoo.

In all honestly we may "wimp out" and only ride fr Marion to BRP ... but we'll see.

We need more peeps to go next time.

Well, we went ...... in spite of being told by everyone we were crazy and getting more than a few double takes from passing cars.

Actually it was about the same temp up on the Parkway as the Chalotte area, until we passed thru the third tunnel ( "Rough" something or other )..... at that point someone upstairs flipped a switch and the temp dropped about 10 deg and wind started gusting... time to turn around.

What a ride..... we started at the bus turnaround on Hwy 80, about 3 miles from the intersection with the BRP. There was no warmup, just immediate climbing. Maintained a constant 5-7 mph, fairly easily. First ride with Shimano R-700 compact crank, which combined with a 27 in back is NOT TOO BAD. Got the R-700 off ebay for $ 79 and $ 30 to install..... best bike deal ever so far.

Coming back down the Blue Ridge Parkway was fairly fast, then back down 80 was the best thrill ride I've ever had..... raced my riding buddy..... 40+ mph is fun.... especially @ 40 deg... you do the math on the wind chill. We WERE getting dangerously close to the middle of the road on several of the blind corners..... thank goodness no traffic.

We climbed just under 3000 ft in a little over 8 miles...... a little challenging. The Assault on Mt Mitchell is May 18 and it's 102 miles with approx. 12,000 ft of climbing. Still much work to do.

Planning on going up tomorrow and riding last part of 80, the Parkway and possibly the summit.
Would love to have some company plus Jill not thrilled with me going by myself.

Any takers ?

Oh, forecast for summit is 58 deg tomorrow, which equates to about 65 on Blue Ridge Parkway.... unusually warm for this time of year.

Craig
