...50-34.... I have 9 speed 105 components.

From what I understand, Shimano R600 and R700 compact cranks will work wth 9 speed set-up.... as well as FSA cranks.

I think I have what you are looking for. I have a shimano crank off of my nine speed. It has a 53-39 but I also have the 50 ring if you want that as well. I honestly have no idea on price. It is used but in good shape. the 53 ring has less than 200 miles on it. Make me an offer.

What crank arm length are you looking for, and what general quality/weight level are you wanting? I have a 175 FSA Carbon Pro with matching BB from my (now dismantled) Felt F65.

My neighbor just installed that crank..... or one very similar.

I have 105 level 9 speed and 172.5 on my 53/39. I'm 5'8" so 175 may be too long... not sure.

What are your thoughts ? Thanks.

The smallest chain ring you can put on a 130mm BCD(53 39crank) is a 38 tooth ring. The compact crank has a 110mm BCD hence the 34 tooth ring or even smaller, it has a 74 BCD inner ring set up.

I could BS you for my gain, but I kinda think 175 may be a bit long for you. It really depends on your leg length. My inseam is 34", and I go 175 for road bike. There are those that say crank length is adaptive, but ultimately it comes down to fit and how high/low your seat is to compensate.

My opinion? Stick with 172.5 unless you have longer legs for your height.

I found a new Tiagra, 9 spd specific compact for $ 55.... but it's 170 crank arm length. ( that crank only comes in 170 or 175 I think, no 172.5 )

My inseam is 29.5 ""... tempted to go for that one. Think 170 is too short ?

I had an FSA triple with 172.5, then I had a double PZ racing crank at 175, and then I immediately went to the crank I have now- I'm on a shimano R600 at 170, and I can't tell the difference between any of them.

Granted, I made major bike changes between each crank, so I may have noticed more of a difference if my bike setup had stayed static.

Remember, we're talking 2.5-5 millimeters.  You will be fine with the 170.  you'll just have to raise your seat a tiny bit.

PS- I'm 5' 9", almost 33inch inseam and the 170 is fine.  The 175 was fine too.

(disclosure: I'm not a bike fitter)
