Subject: I was defeated but no more!

About 2 months ago, I bought running shoes at a running store.  I tried doing some running on my own but could barely run 5 minutes within a 30 minute period of time.

About 1.5 months ago, I started a running training class at a running store.  It started with mostly walking with some running and increasing running time while decreasing walking over the weeks.

Saturday was my long run day and I was supposed to run for 4 minutes, walk for 1 minute for 40 minutes.  My legs would not carry me though and I quit after about 25 minutes.  I walked for the rest of the time though.  I was so defeated.  I thought that there was no way I could run 2 miles today.

So this morning I started out walking for 5 minutes and then telling myself that  I could walk after 5 minutes.  Anyway 28 minutes later, I was still running.  I didn't stop at all.  I went extremely slow and my calf started cramping at the end but I did it.

So although I was defeated on Saturday and I was petrified to not walk while running but I did it.

Congrats!!  The biggest key to new runners is to realize that they cannot be Carl Lewis right off the bat and that just going a bit slower and easier can go a really long way to not only making it more enjoyable, but easier to do!

Even if it feels like your pace is a "crawl" compared to what you would like to do, the process of continuing to run at even a slower effort than you want will go a really long way to getting you to that next level.

Awesome work!  Just remember this breakthrough when you have a bad day.  Most of it is mind over matter after all.

x2. I've been someone who could run half marathons at a 7 minute pace. By no means the fastest around here. But my point is, I'll sometimes take a lot of time off, like months at a time. And when I get back to it, I always start with a nice slow 1-2 miles for a couple weeks. Work my way back into it. The mileage seems to build much faster than if I just try to go out and pound away too many right away. Be patient, take it slow and your body will adapt and eventually let you do what you want. If you try to make your body do what it can not do, it will revolt, and push back harder than you pushed. Not a situation you want to be in.

Good job.  I was in your position 4 years ago...I know how hard it is, but it gets better.  Just keep picking 'em up and putting 'em down!

Congratulations on being persistent.  The run/walk ratio really helps get you used to the idea of running.
