I CAN"T take a day off! It's the off season, so I have no realy structure, I work hard during the season, but I can't take a day off. Even if it's planned, I always end up doing something. It makes me feel so much better when I get a workout in, but I know my body needs a rest. Does anyone else have this problem? What do you do?

I take a day off. In fact, I've taken quite a few off recently But now I am getting fat, so I need to not do that as often. This summer, I went for a few streaks with no days off and I found myself getting a bit worn out. Sometimes it's good to take a day and instead of working out, go and do something fun, like shop and lunch with a girl friend, or take a drive somewhere fun, etc. Or on rainy days, sit around in a cozy blanket and watch movies.

As you said, your body will tell you when you need an off day.  I've been sick for 10 days, hence I have taken about 7 off days.  After trying a spin class last saturday I felt worse.  Thus, I take off days.  If you listen to your body you can't really go wrong.  Just actually listen.  Besides, if you ignore yourself who will listen to you?

But to answer your question: No, I don't have a problem taking a day off when I need one or when life demands one.

No you are not crazy.  Your body will let you know when to rest.

Yup...I have the same problem. I haven't taken a day off from working out since July 4th. Not a single day! And really have no plans to, until oh.....maybe Christmas day. It's a real problem with me...and I admit that I probably need to seek some help. My body is SCREAMING for a break, but my mind won't let me do it. It's a psychological thing with me. I feel too much guilt taking a day off. I keep telling myself (and everyone else) that I feel better when I do some form of exercise every single day. In the past, when I have taken days off, my body gets all tight and stiff and I can barely move the next day. My gym is open on Thanksgiving, and I plan on being there when the doors open at 8am. Christmas is the only day that they're closed, so if I don't get outside (highly unlikely, cuz I HATE the cold!) that will be my TOKEN day off...for quite some time.

No need to take a rest day if you don't need it.  I rarely take a day off completely.  I vary my workouts enough that I never have to stress the same muscles more then 5-6 days a week.  If you are running or swimming every day you might want to force yourself to take a day off and do something else instead.

Take a day off!

You can't get better / stronger / faster unless your body has the chance to recover and adapt from the training. Consider that a day off IS part of your training. Trust and believe that you need it and you won't get the guilt.

I really do believe you have to be as disciplined about rest days as you are about your training, well I have to be, I'm not 20 anymore.  We get fitter and stronger via the adaptation that happens in our bodies while resting. It's hard, every Monday I think, ooh, just a pilates class or a gentle swim but I feel if I give in, I've crossed some psychological line that means the training is in charge of me, rather than me in charge of the training.

How about active recovery? Do a super slow, super easy jog, or a true spin-out, with no push on the pedals and the cadence nice and easy, or do slow, easy-peasy drills in the water. I think you CAN do something every day and not need a whole day off. Doesn't work for all - or maybe most - of us, but for some, sure.

Then again, if your body is SCREAMING for you to stop, you need to listen to it. x2 being in control of your training, not the other way around.

I can relate.  Yesterday was supposed to be my off day for the week, but I was feeling good and would have been depressed if I didn't do something.  On the other hand, last week I had to travel across country for work and was feeling run down and missed 3 days in a row.

x2 on the active recovery...I know some people don't like to see that bright yellow square on their calendar.

Go for the easy swim or a light yoga session. Your body will thank you in the long run.

LOL! "Active recovery", what's that? To Charlie: No, an injury is not in my future, it's in my here and now! I've been trying to get over basically achillies problems since last January...while it's died down and I competed this summer, I keep trying to talk myself into taking it easy in the off season. BUT, I did it yesterday, I took a full day off (with the exception of physical therapy) and you know what? I didn't go insane or gain like, 10lbs, or loose any fitness!

Yup. Just be sure you're listening to it...I've ignored it a couple times and shouldn't have.

But I have the same, um, issue...even on what starts out to be an "off" day, I tend to at least go for a 30-60 minute walk and do a little strength training.

a sound bit of advice from catch-22 (by Heller) regarding crazy:

If you think you are crazy, then you most certainly are not. A crazy person would lack the objective insight to conclude that they are crazy. On the flip side - if you do not think you are crazy, then why should we?

I need to STOP taking days off. Since my last triathlon, I can feel my body turning to mush.  It's a sad sad thing.  But seriously, if your training plan calls for a day off, it's usually because you should've worked hard enough to NEED a day off, right?  So take one!  You may risk injury if you don't.  (At least that's what I tell myself, lol)

Get a new hobby. I was going crazy when I took about 3 weeks off and picked up my wife's guitar. After 2 minutes I remembered that I had never learned to play guitar so I went to the library and got some books.  Now I play really, really bad guitar.

Why not try cross-stiching, knitting, writing software, building a model or playing a musical instrument?

I too don't like to take day(s) off.  However, coming off a back injury I know I have to "be smart" and let my body recover every now and then so I can "hopefully" prevent injury.  Injury = stinks!!!

I too know what it is like to not want to take a day off. My off days are days I planned to work out  but couldnt wake up early enough for masters swimming, or trainer rides before work! If I miss something in the morning I usually run at night though.
