Okay, I need some help.  I'm thinking about running the Cowtown Ultra this year (50k), but I'm not sure how to train for it.  What should be my longest run?  How many 20+ mile runs?  I've been running consistently for over 2 years.  I ran the Cowtown marathon last year and felt great.  OR should I ditch the ultra and try for a sub 4 hour marathon this year?  I can always sign up for the El Scorcho 50K in July.  My motive for the ultra is to cross the finish line.  I need to make a decision NOW!  HELP ME!

I don't think I would train that much differently than for a marathon since the ultra is on roads.  I did a 50k a few years ago and the problem was it was on trails so the winner was around 4:10 compared or about twice as slow as a marathon winner for only 5 additional miles.  The problem with the ultra being on roads is it will beat you up more since you don't have the shock absorbing effects of dirt.  I would just follow a marathon plan and maybe add a few miles to your long run.

You already asked me and you know I'm not a big fan of too many long runs as the potential for a training injury lurks.  I'd just follow your normal mary training program and go long on race day.
