I ran in a charity 5 "tur K" today.  There were around 60 or so, some ran, some walked, some ran with dogs, a few kids on scooters.  Figured I'd stay up with the gals in th bunch, I found out I figured wrong.  The fast runners were just gone in a flash, some gals were in front of me, I was DEAD last of those running/jogging.  So I went from "keeping up with the gals, to staying in front of those walking" !!  I finished last of those who started out running, but gladly in front of those who walked !

I am happy that I finished but realized I may as well walk ! ...........ugh  On an upswing, I can finally swim after around 6 weeks of learning.  So, now to get on a freakin bike and see if I am good at that or if I suck at that too ! lol

Hey, do not be hard on yourself.  We all started somewhere.  You got out of bed and did something this morning while 99% of the world was still in bed.

You completed a 5K...Congratulations

If it's any consolation, you are faster than I am. The walkers always beat me when I'm running. You did great!

Awesome job, you did it.  One great thing about starting out is you will really be able to see your improvements.  You've taken the biggest step and gotten started, maybe you inspired some of those walkers or certainly you'll inspire even more as they watch you get faster.

Good job, did you enjoy the event and all  of the people?

Hey, I slept in this  morning, nursing a minor hangover.  I'm now cooking T-Day dinner and have been drinking beers since noon.  You did good ... much better than me!

as the others have said - Congratulations and don't be so hard on yourself.  Not sure how much training you did for this but just imagine if you were to train for a few more months how much better you would be the next time you tried a 5 k!

That's a big first step!  Congrats   You'll probably enjoy the second one more anyways!

I'm extremely slow also.  Some walkers are faster than me running.  My 5K time from this morning was nothing exceptional either!

You should not be horrified. You did the smart thing, you listened to your body and did not push it too hard. Keep it up!

It's experiences like how you're feeling (which we all have some like this) that make you work to get faster or fitter or whatever the goal is. Use it to motivate, but celebrate where you are at the same time!

Congrats on your race. It sounds to me like you have the bug so I'm sure you'll only improve but the key is not to worry about yourself compared to others. It really is all about you and getting the most out of yourself. The great part of this sport and this site is there's no judging by were you finish.

Thank you all !  Your encouragement just made my day, I actually feel much better from what you all have said . I just really did not know I'd do so poorly, but it can only go up from here ! lol

We actually ran past my folks house (keep in mind I am a 40 year old woman calling my mom on my cell phone to tell her to "look out the window mom, I'm jogging by" ! lol there were times I'd say my little montra "enjoy the journey" over and over and times I turned my music up so loud I could not hear my negative thoughts.

My favorite part of it all was when we ran past my house (at the very beginning, this was held in my neighborhood) and my 4 year old daughter was in the window jumping up and down in her jammies yelling "go mommy mommy.......go mommy" !!

I had not been running at all, my knee was hurting over the past week so I stopped jogging. CLEARLY one needs to keep running !  I'm honestly not sure how to get faster though, I'll have to read up on the forum posts.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all, and thank you for helping me see that I finished my first 5k, so I do have something to be proud of.
OH !!! one last thing, the young man that started out first and stayed that way was coming out of the park as I went in and I smiled and said "this is what last place looks like".  I figure I inspired him !! lol

Many thanks friends !!!

I am just so impressed you got out there and did it.  You know what?   the HUGE majority of people in the world did nothing close to what you did.

I know we are always our own worst critics, but let this one in, you did GREAT

Just ETA, I started running at about age 39, sucked at it.  A few years later, I am still back of the pack, but I have gotten better.  My advice to improve.  (1) patience (2) consistency and (3) the 10% rule (i.e., same as patience, don't increase too fast)

Getting better is a years long process

We finished in about the same place. Less than halfway through my 3.5 mi run one of the walkers - who started not insignificantly behind the runners - passed me. And stayed in front of me. *sigh* But I was WICKED proud of myself because I RAN the whole thing, even if I was near the back.

So congrats to both of us, and boy did that pie taste good with that run out of the way!

Like everyone said you listen to your body and did not push it.  You took the biggest step by going out and doing it!!  CONGRATULATIONS  It will now get easier because you can get a better time next time and next time. What was your time for this 5k? You did not put it on your training site. Give yourself a BIG clap you did it!!!!Cool  You are now a runner!!!
