I know it is a ways out but I thought I'd get a threat started for people who are already scheduling this race. I would love to hear from people that did the race last year regarding the course, etc. Also, is the race spectator friendly. This will be my 2nd HIM this year and will do Lake Stevens 70.3 in August and then IMAZ in November. I turn 40 next month so this is my mid-life crisis. The wife and my 5 kids have been very gracious to allow me to try and kill myself this year so I'm gonna give it my best shot.

I didn't race this one last year but I did volunteer. Last year it was a little crazy downtown because there was the HIM and then Simplot's funeral was the same day and there was another event downtown that I can't remember... It shouldn't be that crazy this year. There will be plenty of places to spectate and there should be plenty of places to park. If you want free parking it may be more difficult but even then it's not too expensive. I'm so looking forward to this race.

oh and spectating at the swim may be a little more difficult because they have to bus all the athletes up and the spectators have to pay(not much) to be bussed up too. And prepare to hike a little bit to drop off your bike at T1 as you have to park in the park below the damn and hike up a dirt trail to the reservoir. Not too bad though.

I signed up for 2009 in Sep. so I would be committed to start training early. This will be my first Tri of any kind. I'm trying to keep up with the guys at work who I run and ride with but who also started swimming, mainly to do Tri's. Did I mention they are all younger than I am? The swim sounds daunting but I figure if I keep swimming 3X/week I'll become more comfortable with the distance. Lucky Peak should be great to swim in, especially if it's not too windy. The bike course will be mostly flat with some easy to moderate climbs. I haven't mapped out the run yet but it should be flat. It's interesting that it is starting at 2pm instead of 7am. It will be warmer for the swim but hopefully not too hot for the rest. Good luck.............Tom

Wow, nothing like jumping right in, a HIM for your first tri!  I too signed up in Sept to be committed.  I wanted a new-ish tri for my first HIM and hubster and I have wanted to check out the Boise environs so there ya have it.

Read through some of last year's race reports and decided to go for it.  Was a bit worried about water temps but since they moved the time up, hoping that will help.  Still nervous about the late start as I'm an early bird but what the heck, trying to be optimistic that I'll go in with a good night's sleep!

Just wanted to check and see how everyone's training was going....? Being from Cali its been hard for me to want to go ride/run in the cold and fog! but I'm still dragging myself outside. anything to stay off the trainer and treadmill. I hope I'm not the only one who finds it mentally harder to train in this kind of weather? Good luck to everyone with their training.....

Going alright so far, I'm 4 weeks back into training and happy as can be at the moment. Volume/time is starting to pick up but it's not too bad yet

This is my "A" race for the season and its all I can think about. I've been slowed in my training by chronic archilles tendon soreness and had a hernia repair surgery two weeks ago. Time off from the surgery hopefully will help the tendon.

I still haven't gotten a good read on the bike course. I've read everything I can find from people but ones person's "hilly course" is flat to another. I did the Grand Columbian and the bike course was a hilly torture (to me). If anyone could compare Boise to that course I'd be grateful.

Any recommendations from locals on a nice place to stay.
Thanks

The bike course isn't really hilly. It's not flat either. I think rolling is a good word for it. It will be pretty easy the first 7 miles or so because the swim is at the top of a damn and it's all down hill until you come over the interstate. Then you're just in the desert for 50 miles or so. There will be NO shade. The end of the bike is downhill though so that's a good chance to stretch.

The run will be super easy. Very flat. It does loop the river so one way will be slightly uphill and the other way will be slightly down hill. But it should be pretty nice. I just hope it's not hot because the greenbelt where the run is can be pretty miserable in the sun. I run that loop often.

As far as good place to stay? Anyplace downtown or off of Broadway or Vista is going to be good. There are no (super) sleazy parts of Boise. I'd avoid anything on Chinden road(closer to downtown) or Garden City. It's not bad but there are definitely nicer places to stay.

I'm really looking forward to this race. Boise is such a great place to train. I'm looking forward to racing here too!

I disagree. The first part of the bike is the hardest. Once you come out of the swim after just a few miles you will hit hilltop. I did this part of the course last year in the Spudman and let me tell you it was not fun at all. It's about a 2 mile steady climb. I wasn't in the best hill climbing shape but it was still not too much fun. I should add that it is followed by a long 4 mile downhill in which i was unable to pedal because i was going so fast.

Josh, Bike course for 70.3 is different than Spudman.  T1 is at Lucky Peak not Spring Shores.  Penny had it right; mostly downhill for 3 miles, then a 2 mile climb out of the valley (Past Fire Station on Hwy 21).  More downhill to Gowen Field, then (IMO) the first significant climb on Pleasant Valley Road.  After that lots of countryside and fields, however, wind in the afternoon CAN be tough.  Couple/3 short/steep rollers as you head back to Gowen Field, then downhill from Federal Way to downtown.  A good ride for cycling, but not the best triathlon ride.  Good Luck, all.

Thanks for the info. I have a friend that lives in Boise and he loves it there. I may drive over there in the early spring and ride the course so I know what to expect on the big day.

We should find a day to get together before the race and ride the course. It would be fun.

I have to say that the thought of riding down lucky peak with traffic on it makes me nervous. I see cyclists doing it all the time but drivers speed down that road and there is a small shoulder and no escape.

My husband says it's awesome though...

Well, always the $64,000 question, huh.  I just look at the elevation profile on the event site and try to go from there, because, just as someone said, one person's hilly is another's flat.

So are we all keyed up, I mean we all should be getting into our "20 week" programs, right?

This is my "A" race as well, a first HIM.

I'm very jealous of the locals who will get to ride the course ahead of time but I guess it's all part of the fun.

Thanks for the tip about no shade on the bike!

Andrea

Popsracer...My opinion on the "climbing" is that there is very very little. My idea of climbing is heading over some of the 6-8000ft passes between Boise and Stanley or Sun Valley. There are a couple of "hills" to climb and some long slight elevation gains but no, what I would call, "real climbing".....Tom

Thanks Tom, I am feeling better about this all. My idea of "climbing" is up out of the saddle grinding up switchbacks and if there is little of that than I will be happy.

On another note, all the race info on the race website including schedule is for last year. Anyone know when or how we will get 2009 info?

Hi everyone! I just started my 20 week training plan last weekend. This will be my first HIM, and I'm excited and nervous I'm on the second half of a 20 week marathon plan for the run, so that's adding a few extra hours. So far so good!  How's everyone's training going?

Hey Roni, guess who just signed up for this one?  Yep.  It is 7 weeks before my first IM so the timing fit and well it is not that much farther away than other HIM's from where I live.  The 2pm start is going to be very wierd and I take it that the transition areas are not near each other, so that will be wierd.  Anyway it looks like a lot of folks are going to be there from BT.

I just finished my first full mary on 1/18/09 so my run in general is pretty good atm.  Bike and swim, well there in lies the rub.  Time to get a cracking.  There will definately need to be a meeting place set up by our locals...

Hi Steve! Cool! Glad you signed up. I look forward to meeting you in person! Yeah, the 2pm start is kinda weird, but I'm hoping it'll make the run a little cooler. I don't mind running in the cold, but don't do so well in the heat. You did awesome on the marathon! How are things going with the pool?

I'm coming up from Colorado for this race.  I love the idea of the 2:00 PM start time because I'm not a morning person.  Maybe it will make the swim a little less chilly!  I'll keep watching this thread to see if the locals come up with a BT meeting place the night before.

Ah the pool.  Contractors in small small towns work um well when they feel like and and aren't hung over.  So the 3 month project is now well into its 9th month with who knows maybe another 3 months to go (please only 3 more months) on it depending on when we see the guy next.  I still have some of his money though so he will be back.  So for now I am driving 100 miles each way to swim twice a week to not lose too much swim fitness till the ice melts on the lake.  I will keep you updated.
