Packed waves, ~150 people/wave. Waves run from 6:45 until last wave at like 9:15. They go every 5mins. Swim is usually pretty rough, has been past couple years. Not horrible, but not flat. Bike is flat and fast and probably the most technical Oly you will ever do. I think it has 31 turns or something close to that. Run is flat with one little bridge. Some areas have some shade, most do not so it can get very hot, especially if you start in a late wave. And transitition area is huge. Bike drop is day before the race. Race morning the body mark lines are long.

Hands down, this is my favorite race!! Been coming to St. A's ever since 2005. The whole town kind of comes alive during race weekend. There are thousands of athletes and families all roaming around downtown St. Pete.  You've got pro athletes like Hunter Kemper, Matt Reed, Becky Lavelle, etc. - they are usually at the expo signing autographs. I talked to Hunter Kemper for a while actually!

The scenery is beautiful! I mean, it's at the beach in FL. Now that I live in PA, I appreciate that I used to live there! Plus, the FL BT peeps are the best. We meet up for a pre-race dinner and have a blast...we usually meet up after the race, too.

You will not regret signing up for this race. I think it's worth the outrageous $150 fee.

St. A's is a fantastic race.  As stated, pretty crowded in the water, got pretty beat up last year.  Bike course is soooo much fun, but it is extremelly technical and can get crowded if you are in a later wave or a slower rider.  They tend to have at least double the norm for race officials because there is a race official training class the day before, so you have to be careful not to get nipped drafting.  Know the rules, follow them and you will be fine.  The run can get hot, but the support and the people along the course are awesome.  Big time race, big time well done.  Beer lines get long fast, so double fisting is reccomended!

Are waves assigned, random, by AG?  I really don't want to be sitting around for four hours waiting for my wave to start and then have to run in the heat.

Waves are assigned by AG.  Usually (every year I have done it) Pro Men, Pro Women, Charity, then M30-34 (2-3 waves), M35-39 (3-4 waves), M25-29, M40-45, etc... Purple People (TnT) last.  You will not be stuck in the back like some tris that put fastest in the back.  I think they do fastest first because the bike course is so tight and has so many turns, they actually want to string it out vs a race like Chicago where the fastest are last (really, the pro's go last and as a M35-39, I was in wave 67!!!) because they need to et the streets opened back up.

God forbid they should let the women start before the men....although I get sick pleasure passing guys who started 20 minutes in front of me on the swim.....I'd rather not be out running in the hottest part of the day.  Let the men have the heat and wind for a change!!! Yes I have expressed this opinion to the president of St. Anthony;s who happens to be a friend

Woot!  Got an official confirmation e-mail from Screwed Up Site Active to be ABSOLUTELY sure I was in...and I am!   Whew.

And I agree with Sue...if you're a chick, you are SO screwed at this race.  EVERY freaking year we are one of the last waves and get stuck in the wind and heat out on the bike/run courses.

I wonder if a lot of people decided it just wasn't worth the hassle.  Or did they up the capacity this year or something?

I saw the banner on the St A's website said that capacity was *4,000* individuals plus 125 relay teams.

I was on the fence about doing the race this year and didn't have time on Monday to sit in front of a computer, so figured I didn't have a chance anyway.

On a whim last night, I tried to get in and did! They obviously didn't have enough old, slow, BOPers entered.  So you can upgrade me from jockstrap status to participant.

Now I just have to remember how to get to the pool...
