Ok i am wondering does anyone have any good training schedules for this race? I am running quite a bit and biking but I cant seem to find the time to get in the pool. Any suggestions?

Here is a couple questions to consider.

1. What is your goal?
2. What is your current base fitness?
3. Have you done triathlon's before?
4. What do you want out of the rest of the racing season?

The training plans on BT are pretty good. Just look into them. If you have questions ask here... or in TriTalk. There are a lot of people more than willing to help out.

So much depends on your current fitness, your motovation and season long goals (and genetics, and time you have to train...). What does finish well mean? Do you want to win the thing? Not likely, especally if newbiz is doing the race.  

If you're looking to just do this one tri this season than one type of training plan is the correct one for you. If you're looking to use this race as a springboard into longer distances this season then a different type of training plan is correct. Also, do you have a background in swimming? Biking? Running? Let's say you're a runner and run 25 miles a week but don't own a swimsuit. You be better served by cutting your running time and getting into the pool. 

Or lets say, like I was when I started, you're an unfit beginner with limited experience in all the disciplines. Then a plan with a gradual build in all sports is appropriate.

It would be senseless to take JChristoff's plan and use it for you. He's training for an early season marathon and mid/late season 1/2 Ironman. Not to mention he has several years of triathlon under his belt already.

Newbiz it trying to get his duathalon procard this season, so his plan will not work for you either.

I'm training for an Ironman, so nope, my plan will not fit your needs either.

My advice, figure out what you want to do this season. Write down your goals, keep them realistic, you're not going to qualify for Kona this year. Then figure out your fitness level. Pick a plan that will get you to your goals with as little pain as possible. If you pick a plan with to many training hours/ sessions you'll get overwhelmed.

None of us really know enough about you yet to give you specific advice on what plan is right for you. It's something you'll have to figure out yourself.

No I am not shooting to win. But I would love to finish pretty high top 10 at least. I have a background in swimming. I swam for about 12 or so years. But I have not swam competitively for about 4 years.... I also was a pretty intense MTB for about 5 years or so. but again for about the past 4 years I have been pretty useless...

 What I am hoping is to springboard into something bigger and better. I want this sprint to be a stepping stone into something more intense. HIM, IM or whatever. Now running is not my thing what so ever. For about the past month or so I have been trying to run everynight for atleast 20 min or so. I have bad knees and I want to overcome pains in my legs.... I am not worried about the biking, I am a little nervous about swimming more nervous about running. 

I am getting stronger with my breathing and my endurance on the TM. I need to get outside and run but I am focusing on TM right now. 

I have about 5.5 months to do this, train and be in top shape, I am on the road but it seems to be a slow road.

I'll be blunt, you have snowballs chance of finishing in the top 10. We'd all love to finish in the top 10 but only 10 people in each race can.  I'm not trying to discourage you, but to make you have more realistic goals. Given your activity level at this point I'd be very suprised if you can break 1:20 for the whole thing (Not that I can mind you, my best for a race like this is 1:24 or something like that). Given your lack of running experience and your leg issues do you really think it's realistic to expect to run sub 6 min miles after biking and swimming? Five and half months is not enough time to get to an elite fitness level, that takes years.

Start slow. Go into this race with the idea that you're going to finish with a smile on your face and finish uninjured. Do a few sprint races and get the feel of the sport. Maybe finish up your 2009 season with an olympic distance race. Very few of us in this sport can actually compete at an elite level. The rest of us are trying to beat our own times and get that personal best or trying to move up to a longer race.

I admire your wanting to dive headlong into this crazy sport. But having over inflated goals is a very good way to get discouraged and quit.

I completly understand not trying to to set my goals to high, but I am the type of person that When I train I train to be the best in anything I can. Setting my goals high makes me train harder. Now in the end if I dont finish top 10 then I will know I trained as hard as I could but the next time I need to train that much harder.

 I am a weird person and I get something in my mind and strive to be the best. Also I have a bet with a co worker..... So I have to win that bet.... lol

Yes, the OSU tri is May 3rd. The Cap city 1/2 mary is May 2nd. Right now my tenative plan is to do the 1/2 mary on the second and the tri on the 3rd.

David gives some good advice.

As far as training goes, slow and steady is simply the best way to get into running and cycling. swimming i am sure you know about. (well looks like cycling too). in running, FAR to many people never come close to what they could do due to a few simply training mistakes. first, they start up too much too soon, it hurts, they quit. that takes out most people right there.

2nd, most want to run too hard too much. running hard comes later, MUCH later. to quote another, speedwork is the iceing on the cake, and you have no cake yet>

3rd. almost no one out there puts in the distance needed. as an example (this is over the top but applies the same), most people doing triathlons run 15-25 miles a week, and wonder why their 5k times never get a whole lot faster, get stuck in the 22-26 min range, etc. now, my example is a collegiate miler. the top guys are running 60-80 miles a week, for a 4 min race. suddenly those 20 miles week dont look like much. most triathletes would continue getting faster, injury free i might add (speedwork/running hard is very very high likely hood of geting hurt attached to it), is simply to run more, more often.

start easy, and be consistant, dont train hard right now. that said, if you want to do well, yes you should be training now for it.

David and Newbz gave great advice, I am new to the sport and I admit I started out way too fast, I had to take a week off just to recover.  They are 100% right, start off slow, build your base, then fine tune it and added speed later.  You will either hurt yourself, or at the least be in alot of pain and get discouraged.  Start slow, you have 6 months till the race.  That is a long time to prepare your body the right way.

I like to write down in the beginning of the month some distance goals to shoot for.  Not worrying about times or speed, just a distance.  Like this month, my milage is IM, and by the end of the month I hope all my workouts add up to the IM distance.  Just an idea.

What is your nutrition plan now?
How often do you eat?
What are you eating?

I constantly eat, it keeps my metabolism churning at a pretty high rate. When it came to training for the HIM this year I would eat 4-5,000 calories a day... I still lost weight.

on the nutrition front time spent moving is much more important than insensity (within reason)

by this i mean you could run for 30 min easy, just jogging, or you could run a 30 min race. the diff in say those two min per mile will only burn you maybe 100 more calories over that, but be wildly harder

if i am remembernig correctly its something like 1100 calories an hour at 6:15 pace and 850 or 900 at 8:30 pace

now, i'm not you, but i would take adding a few more min to my run and running easy ANY DAY than hammering something out. most people over estimate what they are burning and under guess the amount in food. its a simple calories in vs calories used. that being said, like justin mentioned, some things will make it easier, eating the same arounnd but spread out will help a ton in keepnig your metabolisim going.

There are a lot of plans out there. I, and some of my extended family, had a lot of luck with Bill Phillip's, Body for Life. I still eat along the same plan.

6:00 - breakfast
9:30 - snack
11:30 - lunch
2:30 - snack
6:00 - dinner
8:00 - snack

Snacks are usually protein bars or shakes, cottage cheese and some fruit, etc. The meals are generally lean proteins (egg whites, chicken, lean beef, fish) balanced with good carbs (brown rice, whole wheat pastas, etc.) and a veggie.

Carb loading is a myth... It really does nothing for you. Your body will get the carbs that it needs to fuel itself with a balanced diet.

Go to the library and get this book: Training Plans for Mulitsport Athletes by Gale Bernhardt (not sure if this is correct spelling at the last name). I check this book out about 2 times per year. There is alot of really good information in there. Training plans, nutrition tips, strength training plans, tips on transitions, equipment descriptions and needs all kinds of good stuff.

after figuring out how all this works (what diff foods do for your body), you will need to adjust for yourself.

unlike justin it looks like, even at my highest training loads i put on weight very easily.
Right now i am training about 10-12 hours a week getting back into the swing of things and am not eating all that much (granted i am trying to get down to race weight over the next month or two).

my daily meals are rotated a bit later in the day (i get up a bit later, train midday, work evenings and train again at night right now).

normal days look a lot like this:

big salad and bread, or a sandwich around 10-11am, head out and get in a workout, usually bike or rowing. head to work and have a snack on the way there, at work i may workout with the girls (if i biked today then i will row with them, and do body weights with them, a highschool rowing team), after work, around 6:30 i head to the gym and lift/swim and run then. then home for dinner, some type of pasta/rice and either chicken/beef/pork and veggies.

right now i am right around 2000 calories a day and am dropping just over a pound a week. this is about the min i can hold onto with this training load, lose some weight, and still get in good workouts.

if your goal is weightloss, now if the time to work on it if you are trying for more than 5 pounds, as while you are cutting back/making changes, your workouts will suffer a bit, more so if you are not used to it. at first you will feel hungry more, this comes with more training and cutting back some foods (over eating carbs is a very fast way to gain weight), but finding other things that fill you up before you eat are great ways to help here. high volume foods like salads, most veggies, apples, anything like that will help.

I was interested in doing this race.  Can anyone tell me what the bike and run courses are like?  Columbus, if memory serves me correctly, is fairly flat, but I could be wrong.  I checked the race website for a map of the course, but no luck.  Can anyone tell me where I can find a map with these?  I'd like to have a chance to study it and even drive up to OSU and do a little recon. Any help would be much appreciated.
