Subject: Bike/Tri shops in Tampa Area?

Hi all!

I'm new to BT and to the Tampa area.  I'm living in Temple Terrace but working out of St. Pete.

Does anyone have any suggestions on bike or tri shops in the area?  I'm willing to drive a bit for service and selection.

Thanks in advance for any help!

You could try Carrollwood Bicycle Emporium in Tampa or Chainwheel Drive in Clearwater.

Bike shops in the area off the top of my head:

University Bikes on Fletcher Ave in Temple Terrace
Chainwheel Drive on Drew St in Clearwater
Outspokin' on Missouri Ave in Largo (south of Clearwater)

Outspokin' is very involved in sponsorship of the local sprint Tris out at Ft Desoto.

Also Brandon Bike works in Barndon, AJs bikes in BRandon and There is Carrollwood bikes in carrolwood plus I think there is another one up around the New Tampa Y (which is a palace if you have not checked it out)  I'm partial to Chainwheel drive in Clearwater.  There is a tri store in Clearwater as well...tri3racing

In South Tampa (MacDill Ave) there Flying Fish Bikes, formally Dud Thames, and the new Trek store at Shore Dr and MacDill.  Also for tri gear (no bikes) I like American Running Company in Dunedin.

I'm by no means an expert, but I've heard a lot of positive things about the Mad Dogs.

There is also a really fabulous 40ish mile paved bike trail called the Suncoast.  I love it as I'm not sure which areas are safe for road riding.

There are also alot of BTer's in the area too.  MadDogs are out of St Pete which is pretty close, they also have a website I believe.  I'm pretty sure there is a running group, but don't know what it is as i live in Lakeland, and there is also a bike group for road and trail bikers.  Trail is the Swamp, road, I'm not sure.  I'm sure if you do a google search, you can find their websites.  Hope that helps.

Saint Pete Mad Dogs are probably the biggest tri group in the area. However, there are other groups that may not be triathlon specific but their members compete and train together for triathlons.  For a list of some of the various clubs, check out Florida Race Place Magazine:

http://www.flraceplace.com/clubs.htm

The bike shops near Temple Terrace that I am aware of are University Bike on Fletcher and Oliver's Cycle Sports by Flatwoods park off of Bruce B. Downs.  The others mentioned above are all great stores as well.

The stores in Pinellas county listed above are all really good.  I am a huge fan of Chainwheel Drive though.  Also, I don't think that anyone has mentioned Florida Bicycle Sports on Central Ave.  but I recently discovered them while driving around St. Pete on a lunch break and they're fairly triathlon-centric.  They also do VO2 Max, RMR, and LTHR testing on-site as well as offer USAC and USAT coaching. Their site is www.floridabicyclesports.com.

Thanks for the tip!  I work in St. Pete and need to get my V02 max tested again.  I was just looking for places the other day.

The Bike shop is Oliver's where I go.  I love them.  They have moved to the shopping center just across from Flat Woods.
