Veteran 928 Columbus, Ohio | Subject: '08 Looking Back - '09 Looking Forward 2008 was my first year of competing in tri's and road races. Prior to 1/13/07 I was an overweight 46 year old lazy bum. Now I am a half way in shape 48 year old bum. This was my first year of running, biking and swimming in races. Here is what I did: 4 sprint tri's 1 half marathon 1 10K run 1 5 mile run 2 4 mile runs 3 5K runs My goal for 2009 on top of some sprints and road races, my two goals are: Run a marathon (either the New York or the San Antonio) Sprint tri (without stopping for one single second on the swim)! How about you? How did '08 go? What are you planning for '09? P.S. - '08 is not quite over and I may run in a Jingle Bell 5K! P.S.S. - BT was a HUGE help in getting me prepared for and getting through these races. THANKS! Edited by jacasa 2008-12-02 7:29 PM |

Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: '08 Looking Back - '09 Looking Forward '08: 3 marathon attemps, 2 finishes (DNF from the flu for one, Boston and Baltimore the finishes) 1 IM (Lake Placid, beat my IMFL time on only 6 weeks of real training) 3rd place relay team in an oly, set fastest bike split for the relayers (and 27th fastest out of the whole race which included Chris Legh and Chris McCormack in the field, not bad company!) 1 HIM attempt (DNFed because of heat and lack of fitness) 2 olys (one turned into a Du - got 13th overall in that one, 9th in AG in other) 1 sprint (also turned into a Du - 7th overall, 2nd in AG) Numerous running races with a 5k and 5 miler still to go Got my USAC coaching certification and going to get my USATF one next weekend. '09: Year of going short and fast baby! Looking for AG or overall placings in almost all my smaller races and PRs in the bigger ones. Maybe another marathon or two to keep the streak going - but not Boston even though I still have a BQ time available. |

Pro 4608 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: '08 Looking Back - '09 Looking Forward This was my first season of tris and it was an interesting one:
My big goal for 2009 is Ironman Wisconsin. I volunteered this year and am signed up. Other than that, I have IMNO 70.3 4/5, NYC Tri 7/26, a few sprints, a couple centuries, some swim races and hopefully the Horribly Hilly Hundreds as part of my IMWI training. I'm also getting entry to the NYC Marathon again and am considering doing a back to back series in the fall. We'll see how my body holds up. Just having learned to swim and being able to get into this sport has been a gift. I couldn't be happier. Edited by LazyMarathoner 2008-12-02 10:07 PM |

Champion 5312 Calgary | Subject: RE: '08 Looking Back - '09 Looking Forward 2008 was an awesome year. Started out with a 50k race in February that took me 7 hours, my first run over 30 km. Had my first DNS for an early indoor sprint, on account of holidaying in Mexico. Rode my bike to work all summer. Did my first oly and my first half in June. Had a kick training month in August with over 90 hours of excercise. Completed my first Iron in Grand Coulee in September. My running training has been going great, solid months of running since August, a great streak for me. Really happy with my training over all, I mean there is tons of room for improvement, but looking at my log for the year I am impressed with the amount of workouts I got in. Plans for 2009. A sub 6 hour frozen 50 in February. A 5 1/2 hour haf in August. Essential for this is that I keep on the trainer this winter and keep the running up. Looking forward to it. |

Expert 1215 Austin, TX | Subject: RE: '08 Looking Back - '09 Looking Forward After a shaky start 2008 was my best season yet. Did American TTT. Got tired of hearing my fellow competitors comment on how amazing it was to see a guy like me at that event. The result: dropped 45 pounds between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Placed in my first race - 2nd in the Clydesdale division in a sprint. Followed it up a month later with an AG placing. Look out skinny dudes!! Went under 6 hours at Longhorn 70.3. That knocked over an hour off of my previous PR for the distance. Amazing what droppign a few pounds will do for you. Finished Tour das Hugel - 110 miles and 13,000 feet of climbing. It's a great ride if you're ever in Austin in November. My goals for next year: 11 hours at IM Austria; not feeling like death before the 1/2 IM leg of TTT; more AG placings in sprints and maybe at an oly; and be humble about any results I may get. I'm learning that last one from some of my training buddies. Edited by Bumble Bee 2008-12-03 10:26 AM |

Extreme Veteran 394 Columbia, MO | Subject: RE: '08 Looking Back - '09 Looking Forward 2008 March - 1 10k (first place AG in 1st one) April - 1 Duathlon (1st place AG) May - 1 Sprint Tri (beat my time from 2007 by 10 minutes) June - 1 Oly (1st Oly- didnt place but felt great about) July - 1st HIM (crashed on the bike and gutted it out to the finish) August- 1 Sprint tri (1st overall- very small race and I hadnt train at all for it because i started a new teaching job) Sept- WORK, WORK, WORK, no training Oct- 1 Oly (severely undertrained + brutal course = me walking alot on the run) Nov- 1 10k (started training a bit before racing and it went ok)
2009 Main Goals: Complete Marathon (March) Redeem myself by staying upright on the bike in a HIM (June or July) Find and keep a balace between my new job and training/racing. (rest of my career)

Regular 118 The Land of Misfit Toys | Subject: RE: '08 Looking Back - '09 Looking Forward 2008 was primarily a year of recovering from injury, getting injured because I started into it too early, recovering again, and having a pretty sketchy schedule because of a large amount of travel. I did organize a Metric Century for my club. 2009: I'm still kind of waffling between a HIM and Lotoja (206 miles), but I'm leaning toward Lotoja as my A race. That means a lot of bike time. I'll probably ride a few road races leading up to Lotoja and even run in a few 5ks. I'm also supposed to run on a Ragnar relay team, which means that I do need to spend at least a little time running. That's my other A race, but either Lotoja or the HIM will take priority |

Expert 1288 Hatboro, PA | Subject: RE: '08 Looking Back - '09 Looking Forward 2008 was a pretty bad year for tri's - 1 Olympic DNF due to bike crash & 1 sprint DNF due to still recovering from bike crash Running wise - I completed 2 half-marathons & 2 5K's 2009 will be better - I will be the best biker on the roads! Registered for Eagleman 70.3, Philly Distance Run. I will probably due 1-2 sprint tri's in the later summer months and probably some more running races. I'm just trying to figure out some financial matters before I register for more. Edited by phillybarb 2008-12-03 11:13 AM |

Expert 2555 Colorado Springs, Colorado | Subject: RE: '08 Looking Back - '09 Looking Forward 2008 - By the end of the year I will have done about 40 running events ranging from 2 miles to a marathon. I BQed the marathon, had 15 PRs, several AG wins, and a bunch more AG top 3s. I should end up logging more than 2500 miles of running for the year. I did 3 bike TTs, winning one, second in another. Biking was not a focus this year. 1 sprint duathlon where I was 2nd in AG. 2009 - My focus is on running well in Boston, where I hope to PR even though I don't really plan to do Boston again. After that I plan to get involved in triathlon once again, perhaps doing the 5430 series and several others. I used to get beat out for AG top 3 on the run and I think my run has improved to the point where I can be competitive with the top guys in many races. If all goes well and I have available funds I may do an independent iron distance next fall to get a feel for the distance. My lone HIM was done in 2007 in just under 6 hours on very minimal training. A more consistent dedicated effort should put me much closer to 5 hours. |
