I thought it was a beautiful and well one race.  The volunteers were FANTASTIC.
my main gripe: the ride through the slums --- all those pothills! -- at the end of the bike.  yikes !

sorry I didn't meet you all but it sounds like everyone had a great day

Forgive my stupidity, but I gather the RANK is your rank out of everyone who raced. Should DIV POS be your position within your age group? Is it just showing up this way because it's preliminary results?

steven_lohmann - 2009-07-13 12:42 PM Even if the race was flat I wouldn't recommend this race unless you enjoy lines and traffic jams. The point to point thing with this many people in this state this time of year just doesn't make sense and it is a major hassle. This was their second try and they did not pull it off. I wouldn't give them another year to figure it out. I'm not sure where you are from, but if you are in RI and want to do a half iron, do FIRM man in September or Patriot Half Iron over in MA. If you want to do an Ironman brand half iron, pick another one. Yes, it was that bad.

Funny but my experience was totally opposite as yours. I registered on Friday afternoon and there were no lines or waiting. I was in and out in less than 15 min and only because I walked around a bit. I stayed in Warwick and drove to the swim area on Saturday to check out the course and there was some traffic on 1A getting to Narragansett but I thought it was normal for July. Plus since the bike check in was optional that’s a hassle easy to avoid. On Sunday I drove to the starting line leaving @ 4:35 am and the only traffic I encounter was just before turning onto Sandhill Cove and it took us like 10-15min to actually park. I was racking my bike around 5:20ish.

The race started late due to the waves moving the buoys but I didn't think the delay caused any trouble, it is the ocean and more than once I’ve seen a race delayed because of this. In fact I was happy they kept the swim as any other race would have been quick to cancel it.  I started on the same wave as you did, still I had no issues passing people during the bike leg and I never felt the course was crowded in anyway. (Like races such as Steelhead or Florida) In fact it is among the few 70.3s I've done I never saw people blatantly drafting/cheating.

The course was good for most part with normal potholes as any other road I ride every week and the only crappy section was the last miles heading into Providence. Yes that wasn't fun but still it wasn't that much of an issue IMO. Even with the pothole I hit during the race it was no different as the potholes I’ve hit head center through training, that's just racing.

The run course was hard and fun; the hill at the turn around, the big hill and the false flat heading out I think were all good challenges and then the down hills made for fast sections. The support all along the race course was great; they had plenty of volunteers everywhere, stocked aid stations, etc. They had a nice spread at the finish line with food and beverages.

My friend who drove back and forward on race day said it wasn't an issue and she got parking right at the light on Memorial Street. Having the race finish in downtown Providence gives spectators choices to hang out and eat while waiting for racers unlike other races where there is nothing around. The only time I had to wait and it was like 15-20 mins was for my wetsuit bag. Yes that could have been more organized but I don’t think that’s something to fret over. Even the line for LP registration went smooth and I was in and out in 15 min.

Unlike you I think the race course was rather unique and the organizers offered a pretty solid race and experience. Yes the two transition areas can be a logistic challenge but I think they did a good job, definitely much better of what I heard from last year and the venue was pretty fun. My only complaint would be their lack of communication prior the event, but for race day I think it was pretty well run and up there with Tman and other great 70.3 races. I would do this race again for sure, it was well organized, the course was fun and the competition was very strong, that for me is worth more than anything else. Maybe we did different races…

no, DIV POS is your place on the male/female field, that includes all Age Groups.

Sorry I still don't get it lol. I hope trishie doesn't mind me quoting this for me to get it. Looking at the txt file of the results 1307 people raced so how can her rank and div pos in the bike be higher than 1307?

Rank is out of total people?
Div pos is?
Why is the run rank the same as the overall rank?

Don't get me wrong - I thought the course was fine and enjoyed it while I was racing. The crazy turns and obstacle course at the end of the bike was sort of fun and I like running hills. The BS before and after is what sucked. This was the only Ironman 70.3 TM race I've done and maybe I just prefer smaller independent races where you show up in the morning, race and go home. I usually avoid races that are known for having drafting problems since I don't want to encourage them, so I don't give this one points for not having cheaters. I stand by my evaluation of the race and encourage anyone thinking about racing here to think again - there are lots of better races out there.

Glad to have met Lazy Marathoner in T1 - we had a beautiful day for sure. Seems like everyone had a good race! Sat. was a breeze which was a pleasant surprise.  Fitness wise, I felt fine but once I got home, I realized my derailleur problem caused my frame to crack...ugghhh.

It's been 3 years since I've done an Ironman-brand race, so maybe I'm out of the loop.

But was anyone else surprised that the expo was so small? And that the race bag only contained a lip balm? And for us old guys who finished at 6 hours, that there was no pizza left?

The course was great: a bit challenging, a lot of fun. The point-to-point aspect added a mental component to the race as it made you really consider what equipment you needed vs. what you just carry around in the bottom of your tri bag.

However, the timing aspect of dropping off the bike first thing on Saturday morning at one end of the state and then dropping off the run bag by 6pm at the race venue 46-miles away was a pain if you had family and wanted to do something on Saturday that wasn't race-related.

Would I do this one again? No. There are better races -- albeit non-Ironman brand -- closer to home.

I'm confused by the results also. I can't find my AG place anywhere, just the overall DIV place, whatever that means. Where do I find the AG placements? The official site only shows the top 100 finishers.

From an above post: Were you in the White Swim Cap group? My wave (Neon Green) was lined up on the beach and I saw a white cap guy stand up, turn around and walk out. It's not exactly what you want to see as you're getting ready to dive into the choppy ocean!

Yes I was in the white cap group.  the guy was about 20 yards in front of me

I'm with ya on the lousy food. We had mini bagels and potato chip pieces. They really need to work on it - last year was the same way. Perhaps I should learn how to get fast so I can eat more at the end

It only shows 100 but it should say out of how many total, for example mine said showing 100 out of 103 matches so I'm guessing there were 103 in my AG, but I could be wrong. I wish they showed our placement in AG per segment as well. The results kind of suck.

I've only done New Orleans in addition to this one and the expo was non-existent and all we got was a plastic bag full of ads from local businesses. The shirt was better but enormous so it's of no use to me. The post-race area was kind of fun in NO, they had a beer truck and all sorts of snacks but no real food to speak of. I've heard the 70.3s don't usually have the big fancy expos the bigger races have.

As far as the Saturday timing, I guess I'm a little surprised why so many are annoyed over this when it was pretty clear up front that Saturday would be sucked up by race check-in. Maybe it's because I don't have a family or didn't have anyone traveling with me, but it didn't bother me and I assume the day before a race is pretty much going to be dedicated to the race. And I say this being one of the unlucky ones that spent a sum total of about 2.5 hours sitting in beach traffice on Saturday round trip. I used the time to hydrate

Yeah I admit I still can't figure out these results. When I do the athlete tracker thing it says there were 161 participants (M25-29) but when I look at the official results text file, there are only 131 athletes with results.

It's very confusing to me.

Is it because there were only 131 finishers in your age group? The 161 might include the did not finish and did not starts and I think the results only has finishers.

I copied the results into Excel and filtered by my age group to figure out my age group rankings.

FYI, I emailed the RD about leftover IMRI merchandise, and they said, "All the merchandise that was left over for the RI 70.3 is on its way back to the warehouse and it will be available on line in a few weeks at www.shopironman.com "

I disagree with the family part.  I went with my family (Wife and 5yr old boy, 3 year old daughter)  We drove down from NH Friday night checked in.  Went to the hotel 10 minutes from the swim start.  I got up around 8 on Saturday and went to check my bike in.  No traffic and there were like 20 people at T1.  Went back to the hotel picked up the family, drove to Providence, familty waited in the car i dropped of my run stuff and then we went to the zoo for the day.  Early dinner and off to bed.  The best part is when i finnished the swim i took off my wetsuit at the exit of the water and flipped it to my wife so i didn't have to check a single bag.  This whole process was very smooth and it turned out to be a great family vacation.  Also we never hit traffic!
