You're evidentlly a veteran of this one?  I have not done it... in fact, 2009 will be my inaugural year for triathlons.  Wish me luck!

Far from a veteran, I have a whopping 2 years in the sport! lol  Do you have a training plan in place?  If you have any question feel free to ask away by this thread or by PM.  Good luck !

Good race. The run is flat (has a .75 mile section that is on grass, rest on pavement). No shade and last year it was very unseasonably hot and sunny and people were biting it. Wear a hat is what I learned. The bike is fairly non descript except for two pretty big hills right at the end (sprint x1 oly x 2). The swim is in a nice lake. Good setup out aways from the city. This will probably be my first tri of the 2009 season. HFP runs a good basic race. The only issue with this race is that it isnt really close to anything so I would imagine they will start a little late since many people last year tried to roll in right before the race started and rack bikes, get packets, get marked, etc. Not really HFP fault.

Definitely best of luck to you.  I just finished my first season and I'm already nostalgic for how I felt after my first race that lifetime ago.

Best thing to do is to read the forums, especially Triathlon Talk.  Oh, and they're also starting up the 2009 Mentor Program.  When they make the announcement to join, I would TOTALLY recommend signing up for one.  I've been in 2 and they're fantastic in so many ways.  You've got to jump on immediately, though, as they close fast.

Also, be sure to check in on the Ohio forums, too.  Lots of great advice in general and in regard to the local scene - as you can see.

So what is the bike course and the run course like? Flat? Hilly? How intense should my training be right now? This will be my first year for Tri's I am currently doing the 13 week sprint plan.....

I like the bike course. Mostly flat and fast with 2 (or maybe 3) good sized hills at the end of each loop.

The run course is mostly flat. There is one section, run twice on each loop that crosses a grassy area. It's maybe .25 mile. Watch you speed and ankles going across the grass, it's a good place to twist an ankle. The run course offers no shade at all. Last year it was really hot and I saw several people being carried away due to heat exaustion.

I'll post a link to my RR here if I can find it.

See you in June.

I'm in for my first half Iron Man.

Really excited about doing this.

Is there a course map posted somewhere?

there should be a map on the HFP site if they are done updating it.

if not, the bike course is dead flat aside from the last few miles of rolling hills, nothing bad at all.

I've done the race 3 times (2 chances per year).  I'll be there again in June.  I do this race because it is so close to home.

After reading this I just became aware of the June Deercreek - I thought we were talking September here.

Also I failed to read the topic heading which says "sprint"

I'll but out for now - see you in September.

Ok I have a question. With this race. since it is an open water swim would I need to have a wetsuit for the swim? Also I was wondering lets say about half way through the swim I gas out can I do another stroke to catch my breath or is it strictly freestyle?

Wetsuits are up to the individual. Half will have one half will not. All depends on the water temp. As for the stroke you are allowed any stroke to get you to finish. You will see them all at some point of the race.

Don't worry this far out. Keep up the swimming to get stronger. If this is your first open water swim race you might want to try and get a swim in an open body of water before the race. Its a little different and a lot of people panic during the race and start hyperventilating and tire out really fast. Go out slow and steady and build as the race goes. Good Luck.

Should I buy different goggles and all that or would just normal swimming pool goggles be ok?

Ok, I have only participated in 2 triathlons (sprint distance) - OSU in 2008, ans most recently, the Miami U tri last weekend. I am purchasing a wetsuit this weekend and plan to do this race. I am worried about the open water swim. I can see myself being one who would panic and that scares me. Can you touch if need be on any part of the swim course? I am so determined to do this, but just need put at ease and a little more information. I also plan to do the Wendy's Tri the weekend after this race, but I heard you can touch bottom the entire swim due to it being along the shoreline. I plan on not worrying about my swim time and just focusing on a nice easy laid back swim. Any replied are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It depends on the water level of the lake. 2 years ago the water level was normal and you could touch for half of it. Last year the water level was high and what is normally the beach was covered by water. So far the water level seems to be close to normal.

Ok here is my question..... This race is in June. what do you think the water temp will be like for this race? Do I need to purchase a wetsuit?

Also For about the past 2-3 weeks I have been really slacking on swim training and I am starting to get worried that this swim is going to be really hard. And words of advise?

Is swimming 750m in a lake easier than swimming it in a pool?
