Pre-race routine:

Got up, fed the dog, jumped online to BT for a few minutes, grabbed my stuff and out the door. But got pulled over about 4 miles from home for a frickin' burned out taillight and get this ....... dirty license plate! He also said it was illegal in Maryland to have a license plate frame and of course I have my IMFL one on the car. Luckily just got a warning.
Event warmup:

Running behind because of the police officer and thena huge backup coming up I-95 because of icy roads. But got to the race site, registered, grab my tee-shirt, changed into race stuff, dumped some things in the car and ran out and back to the 1 mile marker as I always do (this was my 4th year of running in this race). Crazy windy into out face the first part of the race .... knew it was going to be interesting because of that.

Comments:

It was a little bit of a cluster getting everyone out of the arena and lined up on the street and everyone who was faster had to push and shove to get to the front. Luckily Charm City run was running the actual race portion of the event, so they were well versed in getting people organized.

Gun goes off and I knew there were more speedy people than the last few years including someone I ran x-country with in High School (who is now a sub 3 marathoner and really strong in the shorter stuff). Only took about 200 meters before the race was sorted out from the front with about 6 guys ahead, a few meters and then me and whoever else was behind.

A half mile in or so, one of the guys faded and I didn't see him again. The other 5 were slowly pulling away from me staying pretty much in a pack because of the headwind (it was crazy windy with gusts in our face on the first leg). I was feeling a bit labored and remembered what I had posted in the 5k thread on here a few days ago about how to run a 5k (in my opinion). Sure enough, first mile was tough because of the wind and I only ran a 5:55 with the group going through in about 5:40-ish.

I was pretty much by myself but knew that Sherry Stick (the woman who has one the evet for the ladies every year I've raced it and who I always seem to finish near) would be comiong up soon. Sure enough, not long after we made the turns and got the tailwind, she and a young guy passed me. Two mile split came with a 6:17 mile, so about my usual difference in pace of about :20 for the second mile. I tried to keep Sherry (who had pulled away a little) and the guy close, and they never really pulled too far ahead.

The first half of the last mile (and the second portion of mile 2) is generally uphill, then you turn right and head back to the arena. I was working hard not to let those two get away and when we turned to the downhill I tried to pick it up. I was ever so slowly gaining on the guy until we were close to the arena driveway and he heard me and took off. Oh well, no oomph here so let him go.

Into the arena I looked at the clock and saw 18:52 and knew I had to really push to break 19, which was about as well as I could have expected to run in the race and was my main goal. So I didn't go all out sprinting but definitely upped the turnover and pushed it more. Made it in 18:59 .....
What would you do differently?:

Train more? Do some sort of tempo or speed work?
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around the inside of the arena for a few minutes getting warm air back into my lungs, watched others finished then got my warm stuff back on and sat around waiting for the awards.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lax. running since Lake Placid in July. I had well over 800 miles running for the year before that race and less than 500 since then with little to no speedwork at all. The wind didn't help either!

Event comments:

As I mentioned before, this was my 4th year doing this race and in that time I've gotten a 2nd in AG, two 1st in AG and my only ever overall running race win in the other. So this race has been very good to me and I'll continue doing it! Also, the field has gotten bigger and a little deeper each year, so it is a nice challenge to stay towards the front. And there were definitely more than 17 in my AG as there are a ton of people with no age listed. I really got 3rd in the M30-39 but the first and third place winners were in the AG, so they got overall prizes which gave me 1st in the AG category.

Dood, first is first! CONGRATULATIONS! Great work getting past the lateness getting there, then in the race pushing through the nasty wind and cold and, despite your "lax" running, keeping up the pace and hitting a fast finish to punch in sub-19 and first place AG.

Dirty license plate. I always knew there was something dirty about you!

Nice job and congrats!   I had no idea it's illegal to have a license plate frame in MD!

You've got the race morning routine down. Congrats on the podium and sub-19, Rick... you're a speedster!

Hey Rick,

Great race on that amount of training.  Congrats on winning your age group.
