I'm looking at the Vineman 70.3 and other Ironman 70.3 brand races to throw in next year for fun.  In general, how are these events?  Well run and organized?  Similar to the Ironman series?

I've done Buffalo Springs (3 times) and Longhorn.  Both are very well run.  Both courses are challenging.  IMO Buffalo Springs has a tougher bike course.  Longhorn has a tougher run course.  The 70.3 races are like 'mini' IMs.  They have expos, pro athletes, lots of extra events - breakfasts, dinners, award cerimonies, etc.

Many 70.3 races are well run and organized events.  There are also many non-70.3 HIMs which are very well run events.  For example, EndurFun runs several HIMs--some 70.3, some not.  All are equally well-run/organized.  Unless you are looking for a Clearwater spot, I would pick your races from the full population and not limit it to one series or another.

I'm not.  I race in several local HIM's every year.  I'm looking to get out of the area and Vineman  70.3 is the closest HIM that's not in Vegas and it happens to be an Ironman series and wanted to see if they are over hyped or too epensive for what you get and worth the road trip.

What about Wildflower, Auburn, or Big Kahuna? They are all closer to you than Vineman.

I raced Vineman 70.3 this year as well as Clearwater. Check out my RR but in a nut shell, both events were very well run and organized with lot's of athlete and volunteer support. Vineman was terrific, great bike course.

I've done the Vineman 70.3, and the event is first class! The swim is in a calm, shallow, and warm river (perfect for those nervous about the swim), and the bike goes through beautiful rolling hills and past tons of vinyards! The run was HOT, and didn't have a lot of shade (and since they start you a bit late with all of the waves, this definitely mattered!).

I would do this race again without even thinking twice. It was GREAT for both me and my spectators!

I'm in the minority.  I did Steelhead 70.3 as a relay, two weeks after I had done the Endurathon in Muncie Indiana.  The only thing I can say is that the 70.3 cost alot more and is very over rated.  Hell the 70.3 cost me as much as Muncie and I was on a relay team.  I had a great time being part of a realy with Matt3liv and Trixie, that's not to mention all the great folks I met at the Jazz house overlooking Lake Michigan.

I found the course at Steelhead was lame as hell with to many folks on roads open on the bike, where Muncie was run on a closed bike course, where drafting wasn't an issue with plenty of room to pass and stay legal.  If you spend any time reading 70.3 race reports, there's virtually always about the obscene drafting that occurs and packs of cyclist.  If you look at some it won't take long to find.

The run course was even worse.  I knew three other runners at Muncie, I yelled out at two on the simple out and back course.  At Steelhead I knew at least 12 to 15 others that would be on the run course and the way it's set up I never saw anyone I knew.

I never felt alone on the course in Muncie, which by the way will be running there 30th event this coming July, and I never had to worry about packs of drafters.  Damn near every RR written about 70.3 and even some IM's there's numerous complaints about drafting and packs.

If you find you need a IM brand to make you happy have at it, but there are plenty of great independent HIM's out there that can't use the ridiculus 70.3 moniker that are ran just as well if not better then 70.3 events.

Can't compare to a full distance M-Dot race, but I did Vineman 70.3 this summer and loved it. Mostly rolling bike course...and hillier run than people generally acknowledge, but nothing major. Swim is in a very shallow dammed river and is fast.

doesn't matter really whether it's a Ironman 70.3 or not... if you look at the history of the 70.3 series you will note that the most of the original races were already well established races with very good reviews and followings. The EndorFun crew puts on both branded and non branded halfs - they don't do anything differently in terms of putting on the race whether it's IM or not.

Read race reports.
I love Vineman.
Also love Boise 70.3. Boise is a fast course. Not too far from you.

Too late for Oceanside.
Look into SuperSeal HIM. It's in San Diego. KOZenterprises rocks!

DeuceMan is real close to you too.

I've done Lake Stevens  the last 3 years.  Expo needs alot of work, but the course is fun and challenging.   Pretty well run and organized.  Have some pros and does wave starts for the swim.

They changed the date to late August from Early July, interesting to see how that works out.  Will do it 98% sure for the 4th year in a row.

When did Lake Stevens sell out? I am looking at it as my first HIM and my A race of the season. Thanks
