Rocket Man - 2008-12-15 9:38 PM . Everything else around there is too gator infested for my tastes.

As a fellow UGA fan...given this years performance I don't want to swim, bike or run anywhere near a GATOR.

I ain't scared.

I think Lake Allatoona, or where they do the Acworth womens sprint, is as close to Atlanta as any Triathlon is going to get.

I would love to have a point to point Silver Comet Marathon. 26. 2 miles, one way, 100 percent on the trail. January or Feb date. I would even settle for an out and back, but again, 100 percent on the trail.

Ron, I might have imagined this but don't they have a 50k on the silver comet during those dates?

They do have an ultra sometime in early Feb. It's a low key event. I'd like to see a traditional, chip timed Marathon on the SCT. I have talked briefely with others about doing the ultra, but that was quickly shelved.

Fwiw, my neighbors did the 50k on the SCT ... and hated it.  They said that the concrete just killed their knees while the event was not very well organized/supported.

They did the Umstead 100 and thought it to be a much better race. See: http://www.umstead100.org/

I had thought as much and I don't know if I could stand the Silver Comet for 50k. The only reason I can stand it for 13.1 is because it is over so fast and because it flat but 4+ hours running on there just doesn't sound very stimulating.

And re the Umstead I think I might have a 50k in me but a 100 is almost 70 more miles and I don't have that in me.

well, you might not be able to 'race' for 100 miles, but you probably could go the distance.. run / walk etc. You've mentioned your forever pace before. Drop that down a notch, and who knows how far you could take it.

Well true. Yes, physically I definitely think I could do it. The question is mentally. I don't think I am there . Shut up Doug, I mean for ultra long endurance events. I don't have it.

Don't balme ya. Do you have any idea how many dawgs are eaten by gators every year?

NatNegativeSplit - 2008-12-14 12:54 PM Doug where are we going to do the swim portion of an Atlanta HIM? Maybe Stone Mountian??

Unfortunately, the water at Stone Mountain isn't healthy for swimming.  The park closed the beach several years ago because the water was constantly testing unhealthy for swimming.  If this weren't the case, I would love to see a tri there.  Even a Stone Mountain Duathlon would be cool.  I think there was one there in the mid 90s.

Andi

They use to--like in the 80's--have triathlons and duathons there. I know this because my parents did those races. Well my mom just the duathons, she can't swim. Anyway, I had wondered why they didn't have them anymore.  I remember my dad getting some serious road rash from wrecking inone of the bike races.

Dude...you're making me feel old and I'm barely older than you.

The USTS had a series race there for a couple of years...I did the first one in '83 when I was 16. I raced with Dave Scott, Scott Molina and Scott Tinley (and beat them all out of the water).

Then, in '93, triathlon came back to the park with the DCA Atlanta Triathlon (which I think was a one-year race). I think I still have my shirt from that race...
