Subject: RE: Alcatraz lottery LaurenSU02 - 2008-12-16 5:54 PM OK, this is a serious question as I am considering not doing the race for this very reason. For those of you who get seasick easily, what was the boat experience like for you? I am afraid that after spending an hour on that boat, I will be too sick to even attempt the swim. I could take dramamine beforehand, but would have to practice that in training. I just don't want to go through the effort of getting out there only to have it end before it gets started...or to just be a completely miserable day. It would be a total bummer for me and those out there supporting me. I get seasick fairly easily and didn't have any problems. It is a large boat and you are inside. They take out all the furniture and it is essentially a large floating ball room, where everybody just sits on the floor. If you aren't near a window you can't really see out. If I remember correctly it only took about 30 - 45 minutes from the time you pull out of the dock until you are in the water. They get all the participants into the water in 5 to 6 minutes. It is pretty cool how they do it. When you get to the edge of the boat to jump in. just go. If not they will gently push you into the bay, the girl in front of me hesitated and the volunteer pushed her in. It is an amazing race. When you are in the water and clear of the ferry, stop swimming for a second and look around, it is a perspective you won't forget. Edit: Pictures aren't mine, they are from a friend that did the race last year. He swam with a water proof camera.
