Pre-race routine:

drove the course to scope it out. found the icy spots. got to transition, checked in. set up transition.
Event warmup:

Rode my bike for about 7 miles at easy pace. Rode through the icy spot to see how slick it was and if I could make it. Then stretched. Then ran for a while to shake out the legs.

Comments:

Started out slow, I thought. I was taking it easy because I knew there was a hill ahead and I didn't want to go to fast at the start. Everyone ran away from me. I was getting worried thinking I started way to slow, but hit mile 1 at 7:15. That's smoking fast for me. It was on. Mile 2 and 3 were uphill into the wind and not much fun. The last mile I tried to pick up the pace and finish strong going downhill for the last half mile.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 1
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

Had to run quite a ways from the line to the bike. I was really tired from the run, but I got it done. Got the helmet on and started to run to jump into the shoes. Stopped and just put one shoe on and started to ride.
What would you do differently?:

Take my gloves off and be a little more on track. I was a little indecisive.

Comments:

The wind was really blowing. Strong headwinds and crosswinds. Just never was able to really fly. Almost got blown over one time.

Caught up to a strong female rider about halfway through. We played tag for the last 5 miles of the race. Seemed like she was drafting on me into the wind. Oh well. Turns out she took 1st in her age group.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Just keep riding in the wind for practice.

Event comments:

Great race. Good test. I definitely left it all on the course for this one. I had nothing left in the gas tank. Of all the guys that beat me, 11 of them ran in the 7:30 to 7 min pace. The rest were under 7 min mile pace. Lot's of fast runners out here! Obviously I know what I need to work on this year. I've got to get some run speed. I'm not happy being middle of the pack, but I gave it all I had today.

great job... mop is a ood start reference... in my first ever tri i was thilled to finish firmly in the middle. simply means you have some work to do, but it will be fun moving up thi season. no doubt you will with consistent hard efforts like that

Nice race.  Don't feel alone on the need for speed work.  Great job leaving it all on the course.

Great baseline for your fitness!  Just keep plugging away and you will get there.  Include some LT intervals and Vo2 max intervals to improve fitness!
