70 degrees and sunny today -- now THAT'S why I moved south!  I took my oldest (7yo) with me on a run -- he rides his bike and I run, on a trail along the river.  The birds are singing.  The crocus are coming up.  Springtime is just around the corner!

Hope you all are having a great weekend.  How's the new bike?

New bike is great... except I fell.

It's my first with clip ins and I was unsteady getting on the bike.  I unclipped left, fell right, slapped my head on the ground (thank you Giro helmet for saving my cranium), and have a huge bruise on my butt now.  Some neighbors HAD to have seen me fall, no one stopped or ran over to check.  Nice neighbors, right?!

I lay there for a moment shocked, taking inventory on body parts.  I heard the helmet hit the ground and was so grateful I wore it.  Besides a broken brand new shoe, a scraped hand, and a bruised bottom - I'm in pretty good shape!

Sam, Sorry to hear about your fall. I did the same thing last year when I first tried clip-ins. Except I was in my living room! I clipped in left... clipped in right... fell left. My wife stood in front of me just watching as I fell over in slow motion. Her response... "what the hell is wrong with you?" A friend of mine offered some good "Monday Morning Quarterback" advice and said to practice clipping in and out a couple dozen times before hitting the road. Uh... Yeah... duh... thanks.

I took my bike out for the first time this weekend... a beautiful 60 degrees! I had forgotten how hilly it is around my house... and it was also very windy. Legs were on fire. Also, we have melting snow, so I was getting sprayed by every car that went by. Only made it 9.5 miles and looked like I had ridden a mountain bike in muddy terrain.

All in all, a great weekend. Spring is coming!!!

LOL @ fall in slow motion!!   It does feel like that, doesn't it?!  I also got the after-the-fact "help" from a friend, "You should lean up againat a wall and practice that for a while until you get used to it."  Yeah, thanks - where were you before I made a horse's hiney of myself in front of the whole neighborhood, hahaha.

John - can't wait to hear about your race!!

I'm here too!  I have been swamped at work and spending extra time training.  No one responded to my last post so I had given up and was sad :-(  Now you two are back & I'm happy!

Seriously, I visit a lot at work & have been swamped.  Haven't really even been in the forums - though oddly I have time for Twitter & Facebook.

How is it going for everyone?

I attended a swim clinic on Saturday and am scared of the results.  The video is on its way to me via the USPS.

Had a great (indoor) ride yesterday... 88 min, 30.7 miles. Training has been going very well and I'm feeling super confident for my first Olympic race in June... so confident that I'm 90% sure I'll sigining up for my first 1/2 IM, which will take place in October. I'm going to wait until April/May before I register so I can be sure the workouts are still on track and no injuries have crept up.

I am mourning the loss of my beloved Aqua Sphere goggles. It took me months to find goggles that I truly loved. I've used Tyr and Speedo, but could not stop them from leaking, no matter what I did. I've had the Aqua Sphere's for about a year or so and I misplaced them somewhere. I ordered 2 new pairs and I'm just waiting for them to arrive.

Hitting the gym at lunch today for a 45 min run. Still too d@mn cold out for any outside exercise. WHERE IS THE WARM WEATHER!?!?!

I hear ya.  It was up into the 60s-70s here not too long ago.  I did some outdoor rides, and getting into the pool wasn't nearly as difficult as it has been.  But lately the weather has been awful -- cold and rainy, with freezing rain the other day.  I'm really learning to hate my trainer...

In oklahoma if it gets warm then its hurrican winds!  That is the one thing i hate about this state....It is ALWAYS windy!  Like a non windy day would be 10-20mph! Supposed to be in the 50's saturday but super windy! Oh well, better than the trainer.

YAY - my guys are back!  lol

I just picked up an indoor trainer last week, so I am still in my honeymoon phase with it.  Getting to ride my bike while watching TV and looking out at the cruddy cold & snowy weather makes me happy!  I bought a Cycleops Mag+ - it's the mag with the shifter that attaches to the handlebar & increases tension.  I'm happy with it - I jsut couldn't shell out the extra dough for the fluid just yet and the LBS didn't have the Cycleops Fluid 2 that I would have considered so that made my decision to stay in my budget pretty easy!

So this week begins my commitment to swim week.  I am challenging myself to get in the pool every day this week.  I am going to take it week to week.  Then, I am switching off running and biking alternately.  Looking forward to it being light when I get home starting next week (daylight savings time) because that means no more dreadmill!  I will run in the snow, cold, rain but not the dark :-)

OK that was lengthy - clearly I'm glad you all reappeared!

Welcome back everyone! Sam and I were getting lonely.

Training is going well... i pulled the trigger on a Garmin Forerunner 305 about 1/2 hour ago. Can't wait until it arrives so I can play with my new toy. Since spring is right around the corner, I decided to wait on the trainer. I'll keep my eye on Craig's List for a bargain over the next several months. Oh, and I bought new running shoes over the weekend... this can be quite the expensive sport, huh?

Almost 20 mile bike (spin) this morning at the Y. It was 7 degrees when I left for the gym. That bites... literally! We're supposed to get into the 50's by the end of the week, so hopefully all this snow will go away (and stay away).

Good to hear from you all. Happy training!

Alright!! How is everyone's training going?  I started a 6 week build up plan before i start my 20 week plan for IMKY.  So far i've only missed a swim and a strength training day.  Got most everything else in.  I've been looking at some of your logs and i can't say that i like what i see.  Come on guys.....OK somone give me some advice on nutrition.

I usually use gels and sports beans on the bike....a few gels and fruit on the run.  I usually used Acceleraid for my drink, but have had some stomach issues during races that i think is do to the high amount of sugar.  Any suggestions or comments?

Hey!

I have been training but logging in my Triathlete's Training Bible Diary.  I have been heavy on the bikes & runs and added Yoga.  Now, I need to add in some strength - considering two a days every other day incorporating P90X.

I use Cytomax, GU, and Shot Blocks - but I like sugar like a fiend.  I will say that I mix my Cytomax weak and if you get the pink lemonade it is a little more tart than sugary.  I have the Tropical Punch now and WHOOOO is that like drinking kool-aid if I don't reduce the amount of powder.  If it's the sugar bugging you, try some of the Hammer products or maybe Cliff.

I have been using Hammer's Recoverite after my sessions and it seems to work wonders though it could use some sugar :-) hahaha

I'm building as well for my 6/26 Olympic Tri. I'm feeling pretty good where I am right now. I'm up to 5 miles on the run, 20+ on the bike and have been consistently doing 1 mile on the swim. I did get over 30 mi. on the bike a couple weeks ago, but had a nasty stomach bug last weekend that derailed my training for a few days. I'm going to see where my training is at the end of April and then make the decision if I'll do a 1/2 I.M. in September.

I definitely need to get better schooled in nutrition because it's a guessing game for me right now. I've only done sprint tris up to this point, so nutrition hasn't been all that important. Once I can get outside for runs and biking and as my distances get longer, I'm going to do some experimenting. But I really have the easiest time eating (and digesting) the hammer shots I think they're called. Aren't those the little gel cubes? They were giving those away at one of the longer sprint tris I did last year and I finished the strongest.

The gel cubes are shot blocks from Cliff.  They rule!

I used to use sport beans but the shot blocks taste better, go down better, and give me better results overall.  I like to eat sport beans every so often if U'm jsut drinking water.  But they are too sweet to eat when I drink my Cytomax.

Try the lemon-lime shot blocks - deeeelish!

How is everyone's training going? I had a solid week with my best swimming to date... 3800 yards this week, with 2000 of that this morning in 49 min. I have an outdoor group ride planned for Sunday (62 degrees forecasted... woo hoo!). My running is building nicely... up to 5.2 miles. Still eyeing the 1/2 IM at the end of the summer.

Sam, I ordered a couple cases of shot blocks... one of them Lemon-Lime per your recommendation. How is your training going?

Brian, we haven't heard from you in a while and I checked your log recently and didn't see any activity. I hope you didn't have an injury... give us an update!

The lemon-limes are the beeeeest!

My training is going really well, but I had to take yesterday off.  I was feeling mentally crappy.  Sometime yesterday afternoon I started having heart palpitations and so I went to the doc today bc they were continuing.

They did an EKG & i have to see a cardiologist but as far ast they can tell it's probably an electrolyte imbalance.  They said myheart looks jealthy and my heart rate is 48 BPM!!!  I was called a well-conditioned athlete by my doctor.

So, that made me ecstatic!  I am drinking some cytomax now thinking that may help if it's an imbalance.

I have been biking about an hour at a time, avoiding the pool, and am up to 6 miles running.  I am going to be totally ready for the half-marathon on May 3rd.  I have my season opening fun run on the 29th - The Shamrock Shuffle in Chicago coming up.  Excited to try out my new skillz. :-)

How is everything for you?

A few years ago, I had to do an EKG, followed by a halter monitor and then a stress test because of an irregular heartbeat. After all that, the diagnosis was (drum roll please)... too much coffee. I weened myself off coffee for a couple years, but have slipped back into my "bad" habit (as I'm drinking my Xtra-Large Dunkin Donuts coffee right now).

Back to training... had a great (indoor) ride this morning... 27.4 mi. in an hour and 20 min - averaging a little over 20 mph. I got off to a slow start this week after shoveling 4 tons of river rock for a landscaping project I'm working on. Sore back, nasty blister on the back of my foot. Waaaaaaaah! I should be able to run again tomorrow and will try to do 5 mi.

My biggest issue is that my diet is not anywhere near where it should be. I really need to commit to eating healthier stuff, becuase it's definitely impacting my training. It's not awful, but I'd probably rank it a 5 on a scale of 1-10. More salads, more good protein, more fish, etc. Less snacking (why does my wife keep making cookies?!?!?!) and less fast food when I'm on the road for work.

My first tri is a short sprint over Memorial Day weekend. Should be a good warm-up for the Olympic in June. Still looking for races in July, August and Sept... trying to decide what distance I want to do.
