The water's warming up nicely at Newfound! It's up to 53 already, which is great for this time of the year. I know, I know it sounds COLD. It is, but we've got 5 weeks....

A few of our crew are up riding the course this am...

I think 53 is good news! I did Bassman last weekend - and a week before the race they were saying the temp. was 55!! Eeks - 55 for my first OWS? I was freaked! Luckily we had a few warm days before the race, so we were up to 60ish by race morning- totally doable. Hopefully we'll have the same story for Moosey

I'm planning on going up to ride the bike course next week. This is my first HIM so I really want to be ready - especially for the hills!

I saw this today for the lake temp.

http://home.metrocast.net/~prondeau/NewfoundWeatherVws.html  45 degrees - Brr!

I'm pretty tough but not that tough.  I really want to wear my sleeveless wetsuit.

I did a training ride around Acadia National Park's park loop road yesterday X 3 which equates to about 56 miles.  I was wondering if anyone has ever ridden both the Mooseman route and the park loop road? From the elevation profiles it looks like the park loop road has more (and longer) hills and the elevation goes from below sea level to 750+ whereas the biggest changes in elevation at Mooseman are around 250 feet.

I thought this would be a great place for me to really work on some hills but would like to know how the two routes stack up side by side (not just numerically).

Thanks.

Hey - that's crazy - I was out there on Wednesday too! I did a full first loop, and then part of a second loop for 45 miles total (didn't have time to do full 56). Made it up Devil's Hill both times I honestly think the harder hill is right after that where you're going up to make the right at the stop sign...

I was convinced I was going to have to walk up Devil's Hill the second time, but there was a high school cycling race going on so there were a ton of parents, coaches and spectators lined up Devil's Hill. The race was over, but they cheered for me as I did the slow and steady up the hill Kind of fun.

Anyway, since this is my first half, I'm feeling much better that I've ridden so much of the course.  It's going to be long and slow for me, but I'm going to make it through  I have, however, decided to throw running and swimming into 'maintenance' mode for the next week and a half (before taper) and focus on biking. Up as many crazy hills as I can find.

PS - here was water temperature:
water temp
I brought my wetsuit, but didn't go in. Hope it starts warming up soon!

water temp is actually 52 right now

For the webcast, we'll have live feeds from the swim, bike, run, finish, and probably Devil's Hill, so all of your family and friends can tune in and watch you climb it

So I rode the course last friday - the roads around the lake are repaved, do NOT expect it to be smooth like glass - there are still cracks and bumps but major improvement over last year.

3A however sucks.  It needs to be repaved.  I had to get out of aero as I was so tense I was taking the hit in my shoulders.

having said that it was on 104 that the giant shard of glass found my rear tire and I flatted.

It is definitely a challenging bike course - lots of rollers, devil's hill, and the hills keep going - it is afterall NH.

I punted on swimming - changing the flat was a challenge - new Michelin race tire on a 404 rim (my rear one has the powertap so I train with it) - anyway it was TIGHT - even broke a tire lever trying to get it off and by the time I was done fighting with it (20 minutes later) I decided ONE loop was enough.....and the swim did not happen.

Glad I am doing the Oly.  Glad Timberman is my first HIM (and 3 months away) - rode it sunday....

Just wondering, is anyone else staying at the Comfort Inn in Ashland?

The reason I ask is that I am looking for a ride to the actual race on Sunday morning.  I will be traveling with my wife and two small children and they would rather not go as early as I would like (and it will be a long day for them anyway).

If you can help, the Dunkin Donuts is on me.  Much appreciated.

Yeah, I'm excited. I've not been able to get my RHR below 50 for a couple days now and it's probably not going to get back down there until after Mooseman.

I too am getting very excited.  I can't believe it's almost here.  This will be my first HIM and I hope I am prepared enough.

I'm a little nervous about the swim (my weakest link) and the hills on the bike course.  So I have a question about figuring about elevation and total climbing distance.

My husband and I rode a 43 mile course this past weekend that had 6200 ft. of total climbing.  I saw on the elevation map for Mooseman that the elevation gain for the 55.26 mile course is 3416 ft.  I'm trying to figure out how they compare.  It seems to be that we did twice as much climbing as the Mooseman course which would put my mind at ease but I'm not sure.

6200' / 5280 = 1.174 miles

1.174 miles / 43 miles = 2.7% average incline

-----------

3416' / 5280 = 0.64697 miles

0.64697 miles / 55.26 miles = 1.17% average incline

Conclusion: the shorter course had the higher incline for the distance.

================

This being said, the average incline is only 1/2 the story.   The slope of each of the hills, and the aggressiveness that you attack these slopes, will "burn matches" and toast your legs for the run.  My suggestion is to spin-spin-spin up the hills rather easily, especially in the first 2/3 of the bike leg, then you'll know how you're going to do for the final 1/3 as well as the run.

"Any hill can be flattened if you have the right gears".  I'm riding my Giant OCR C3 with three front chain rings -- love the granny gear for long, steep slopes!!!

Best of luck ... it looks like you'll do great!

The webcast will be at www.moosemantriathlon.com. Go to the Tel-E-Vision icon/link on the homepage.

Lots o' cameras on course. Looks like we'll have a closed circuit TV or two at the race site, so you can watch what's happening on course too, when you're done your race. Family/friends who are at the race site can watch too.

Those at home can tune in on the web....

My Garmin uploaded into the Garmin software and the BT route system both over estimate feet of climbing often more than double of what it really is. It seems most methods of calculating is highly variable so I take it all with a grain of salt.

Well, we may not have done quite as much as the Garmin said but it was still a lot.  We were in Deep Creek, MD and roaming around SavageMan territory.   I figure that the Mooseman course can't be any worse.  :-)

You should be good SavageMan is nasty hard.

First 6 miles until you make the turn are the most challenging then it mostly rollers. It is a beautiful course and lots of fun.

He posted this to the forums on the endorfunsports pages:

You’ll all be happy to know that the water temp is now 58 degrees. I know it sounds cold, but it’s actually about 7 degrees ahead of where it normally is at this time. Things warm up quickly this time of the year, so we could be looking at mid 60’s on race day.

Sounds like a great full sleeve wetsuit temp. My earlier tri this year had a swim temp of 62 and I found that to be just about perfect temp.
