Pretty big story here in the Twin Cities area this year contributed to passage of the new laws.

I remember that story as it's probably the saddest one I've ever read. As a dad, I was very haunted by it. If you're inconvenienced by a new drain law related to that incident, it's worth it.

Im a dad also, all for pools beign safer, jsut thought theyd get it done before the deadline. I cant imagine the hazard caused by kids not learnign how to swim because the pools are shutdown?

I read a story several years ago about this happening to a young boy, so this isn't something that should be a surprise to anyone who builds or operates swimming pools.

I can't imagine why the entire pool and recreation industries wouldn't have immediately corrected the danger -- Years ago.  This sort of thing really fires me up.

As someone in business management, I can't understand how any business can not have the safety of it's employees and customers as its top priority.  It's not just the right ethical thing to do, it makes good business sense in today's litigious society.

I'll get off my soapbox now.Embarassed

Sadly it's probably due to cost. It happens 1 out 10000000 times. Costs them $x lawsuit on average. Replacing all the drains costs them $x times 3. Probably is just numbers.

This happened in my home state and it really was a horribley sad story.  I knew this was going to be a MN law.  Didn't know it was a federal law.

The pool at my club was closed for a week and just opened back up yesterday. They did not specify what was going on, but I imagine this was the main thing they were fixing.

Edit - this answer was written by my wife who is the Parks and Rec Director in our hometown.

I operate an indoor pool and there is a federal mandate entitled the Virginia Grame Baker pool and spa safety act. The deadline for compliance was Dec. 19th. All pools and spas have to have new drain covers and some have to have anti entrapment devices installed. This is problematic due to the lack of available equipment for pool operators to purchase and install as well as health departments having the knowledge and man power to enforce the new regulation. My guess is that the pools you swim at have voluntarily closed until they are able to meet compliance. This maybe way more information than you need but I hope I gave you an answer. If you need anymore info let my husband know and I would be happy to answer.

My pool on the Air Force base closed as well due to the law. From what the Manager was telling me was that they are having a hard time sourcing the parts, funding, and labor to do it and with that, an unknown amount of time closed....so it looks like I may have to pay for a YMCA membership for awhile.

Main pool I go to is getting the new drain covers in April and the local YMCA is getting their drain covers replaced soon after that.
