Time Warner and Bright House will be dropping 19 of their channels tonight. Including Noggin, Nickelodeon, MTV, VH1, Spike, The Comedy Channel and others. If you subscribe to Time Warner you can call 1-800-762-3786. If you have Bright House you can call 1-855-309-3279. I have TW and I have told them that I if they drop channels, I will drop them. I hope you will do the same. (Or call your local cable provider).

I was reading about this today...TW claims it will raise user rates a few cents a month (less than 1 cent a day) so they say they are actually going to bat for their subscribers to keep their prices down...I just had to laugh...when you're paying at least $50 for basic cable, what's a few more cents a month?  As if cable rates don't jump astronomically just about every year.

They're idiots, and hopefully enough people will drop them for another option (if they have one).  I'm glad Comcast isn't having the same problem since I have no other option in my apartment building and I'd be very upset without Comedy Central.

If I read the story correctly, Viacom is demanding huge price increases on these channels from the cable providers.  Cable providers attempting to hold the line.

I'm sure it can be spun either way, but the channels aren't blameless in what might happen tonight.

That's how it got to $50 in the first place.  I think they realize, as the tone of your post indicates...they are reaching their upper limit on price.  Cable co's can't be held hostage by channels and expect end-users to "take it" in order to keep a bunch of channels with flat ratings on their menu. i.e., no justification for the increase.

I'm not arguing with you...just think these battles are two-sided with no heroes.  Generally only one side is shown in discussions.

Nothing new here. This happens all the time. It's just squabbling and posturing over price between the cable company and the networks, both of whom think they have the upper hand. Trust me, as someone who worked in the industry for almost 10 years, NEITHER side has the consumer's interest in mind.

Eventually they will settle and you will get a piece of mail saying, "...unfortunately, due to the rising costs of programming, your basic monthly rate will be increasing to $XXX."

I'm going to miss all those music videos they play...

Really, I couldn't care less about the "music" channels.  Comedy Central and Spike will be missed though.

Actually, only kind of in jest, I will miss some crappy reality TV like Celebrity Rehab (i know......  ).  But as someone else pointed out they will resolve it to our detriment.

As for dropping TW, AFAIK, that would mean going to rabbit ears (which you can't anymore starting in Feb anyway) or satellite.  So unless we get a whole new system, not much we can do about it

Crap, I've got a 5 year old and a 2 year old, and the ONLY channel they are allowed to watch is Noggin.

Double crap!

Here's the Time Warner spin:

We are negotiating earnestly, honestly and fairly with MTV Networks, but so far have been unable to reach an agreement or get an extension.

MTV Networks may pull its channels from your lineup on January 1st.

• MTV Networks wants our customers to pay millions more.  They are currently demanding price increases that are nearly triple the rate of increase under our current agreement. These increases would be excessive even in a strong economy, but given the current conditions, it’s simply not fair to our customers.

• MTV’s demands are outrageous and would force our customers to pay millions of dollars more per year. MTV’s networks are not worth so much more today than they were yesterday, especially given the fact that their ratings are mostly declining in recent years.

• Much of their popular programming is also available for free online. In this economy, we don’t believe it’s appropriate to ask our customers to pay so much more for programming with declined ratings or that's available for free.

• We’ve successfully negotiated hundreds of programming agreements with other cable networks, many within the last few months. Our hope is that we will come to an agreement with MTV Networks that is fair to our customers.

We just got home from vacation last night.  I threw the TV on for the kids so I could have a little while to unpack- my 7 year old came running in to tell me it said something on the bottom of the TV about losing 18 channels tonight.  Luckily, we have Direct TV so she's safe.

We just switched to TW from DirectTV. I was sick and tired of dealing hardware failures and losing the satellite signal every time a strong breeze came along.

Comedy Central and Nick are two of the main reasons we have subscription TV at all. This current stuff is just nonsense. I have zero respect for this industry. We're probably going to just switch to basic, local channels only.

Considering my cable bills jumped by 25 bucks last month, I think TWC can go F! themselves.  If I had it my way, I'd cancel it all together.

I get charged $45+ a month for cable and DVR boxes, as well as having a single HD box.  And of course, they put the "premium" channels on the triple digit channels so I'm paying an extra $12 per month just to have a cable box that can show Noggin in the boys' toy room.

I have the triple-play, but they are very close to getting the old heavy-ho!

Total scam - and for every penny the conceed to Viacom when this all settles, they will pass along 2 pennies on the bill to us!

I have rabbit ears (and now a digital converter box, because of the switch in February). Seriously, the pic is great and you get all the local channels, plus some, for FREE. There's really no need for the basic, local cable channels if that's all you want. I also have this sports channel I never had before (and that none of my friends who susbcribe to cable, satellite or FiOs have) that has aired Kona like 5 times in the past two weeks, as well as a handful of other tris.

p.s. - If you are even considering getting a digital converter box, go online NOW and apply for your coupon. My coupons expired on 2.11.09; I don't know if ones applied for later than mine will be valid until a later date.
