Subject: Compartment Syndrome surgery in Atlanta?

Just curious if anyone has had a facsiotomy for compartment syndrome in Atlanta?  There is a very strong possibility I am dealing with compartment syndrome.  I've had the same issues since 2003.  I never had the pressure test done because not long after it started in 2003 I stopped doing triathlons and had been competing solely in cycling (road and track) where I still have weakness in that leg but nothing like what I experience while running.  Since getting back into triathlons this past summer the same symptoms have popped up again and are now at the point where running just isn't doable again.   So .... I'm seeing my doc next week and will be requesting the intracompartment pressure test.  I'll also be seeing my neurologist for an EMG to make sure I don't have some kind of nerve entrapment issue.  Already had a lumbar back MRI to rule out a disc issue.  I know from the research the only way to really "cure" compartment symdrome (if that's what I have) is surgery. Already done the ART, accutpunture, massage, etc route and while those things do bring some relief they are only addressing the symptoms and not the cause.  So I'm just curious if anyone in Atlanta has had the surgery and if so who did it?  I think my ortho is great BUT am just curious to know who other people have gone to for this injury and surgery.  Also, if you had the surgery how soon were you back running?

Thanks in advance!!!

Kari

As a trauma surgeon, I do a lot of fasciotomies for compartment syndrome on an acute level. If your pressures are elevated and you dont have a venous thrombus of blood clot, you need a fasciotomy. Probably just the affected compartement. I would recommend dr. Xerogeanes ("dr X"at the emory sports center.

Thanks!  I should know if my pressures are elevated or not later this week. I may find out this isn't the problem but my symptoms fit compartment syndrome a little too well. My ortho is Dr. Thomas Myers and he's been awesome with some serious shoulder and knee injuries I've had over the years but I tend to think of him as more of a knee/shoulder specialist ... that's why I was asking for other names just in case.  Thanks again for the input.

I had a fasciomety done and then overtrained and had to have it done again.  They went in and put a patch on.  4 months of rehad and I have been pain free since.  Like you, I could not run more than a mile or two and the pain would be unbearable.  Hills were not even possible.

But with 2 IM races behind me....time well spent!  My neighbor knows the doctor that did mine (in Va) so I can ask her who she would recommend locally.

I had this a few years back from applying clorox to poison ivy on my leg. My GP could not figure out why it impacted my leg the way it did however he had my rush to Northside for further testing. Good news is it just took some meds to relieve the pressure. However I feel incredibly lucky because judging from what my GP was telling me, it could have gotten VERY ugly.

Thanks Dan!  Good to hear from someone who has been through this.  My doc doesn't have the equipment do the test and wants to see me first before referring me out for the test, but I've contacted another sports med office that does have the equipment for the test and can see me this week.  I don't want to waste another week, or however long, to see him first (I just saw him about 2 months ago) especially if he does end up recommending the test.  I know it's not pleasant so that may be part of it.  Symptoms just seem to fit too perfect so I just want to know if it is or isn't CS, and if it is, then I just want to get in there and get it fixed!  Thanks again!
