Generally a sprint is:

Swim - 0.6mi, Bike - 12.4mi, Run - 3.1mi

so a mini sprint would be anything shorter than that...  I don't think there is a 'definition' of a mini-sprint.  It varies from race to race... also, sometimes you'll see varying distances for sprints, olys, even HIMs.

Sprints and mini sprints all vary in distance. It depends on the race director and the location what the distances are.

Sprints are maybe .3-.6 mile swim most are around 1/2 mile unless pool swim
Bikes portion can be 8-14 miles, most are are in the middle
Run is typically 3.1 miles but could be a little longer or shorter

Mini sprints are probably about half the distances of sprint but can be more or less.

Pool swims are usually 400 yds or less.

Sprints and mini-sprints (sometimes called super sprints) have no set distance.  Contrary the previous post Olympic, HIM, and IM all defined distances.

I guess I was thinking about HIM "Lites" and similar races.

And then there are the Super Sprints. I think Sprints don't have a fixed definition other than "shorter than an Olympic".

Bingo!

I have seen a sprint defined as " a race that the winner can complete in an hour" but that leaves a huge gap, between the one-hour race and the Olympic. What would you call those races?

Realy, don't dwell very much on labeling the race. Just do it.

They can always vary a little higher or lower but here are two specific examples...

Chicago has a Fleet Feet Super-Sprint the weekend of the Chicago Triathlon.  The distances for it is as follows:

  • a 375 meter (.25 mile) swim in Lake Michigan parallel to the beach
  • a 10 kilometer (6.2 mile) bike
  • a 2.5 kilometer (1.55 mile) run

The Naperville Sprint in my area is a standard sprint and is the following distances:

  • Swim 400 meters
  • Bike 22k (13.3 miles)
  • Run 5k (3.1 miles)
