Comments:

My first trail run. I mis-stepped many times and was a little worried I would roll an ankle, so I just relaxed and let my feet move with the contour of the ground. I got behind someone who was just fast enough to challenge me, but not so fast that I would injure myself. You could not pass in many sections of the course.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe wear a GPS since there were no mile markers and the trail gave me no sense of how far I had gone. I thought I was about 4 miles into the run when a guy said; "a half mile to go and your finished!"
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and stretched a little. My knees were real sore.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of trail running.

Event comments:

No age groups!

Nice job! I got behind a big group and just could not pass anyone.  Decided that I would just try to finish without falling in the mud and had a good time although it was definitely my slowest "run" ever. At the very end on the wide muddy road I was able to get around the group.

I looked for you there, but since I have never met you, I couldn't pick you out from the crowd!  Did you log the race here on BT?

That was my first trail race and my feet are feeling it today!

How did you do?  And I am with you on the passing.  I wasn't sure what was etiquette on a trail run, so I passed when the guy in front of me passed.  A lot of people walked both up and down the hills.  I would have moved a little quicker up and down, but didn't want to be rude and didn't want to hurt myself even more!Smile

Too funny! This was also my first trail race.  I was shocked at how long it took me.  I'm a slow runner anyway, normally about an 11 minute mile, but good grief, I averaged over 13mm!  A couple of people had warned me to expect much slower times, so I was just out there to have fun. But there was a lot of walking both up and down the hills.

I am not sure about passing etiquette, when I felt like someone was right on my heels I would try to move slightly to the right and let them pass, but the people in front of me seemed oblivious to this.

That said, I really did have a lot of fun. We had a group of 7 from our running club drive up from Springfield, so it was a fun day.  I have not done a formal race report, am kind of waiting for some pics.  I carried a disposable camera and snapped a couple of shots of the ravines, but don't have the pics back yet.

Congrats on your first trail run!!!

I love them. I did this race a couple years ago and had a blast. I'm not sure if they've changed the course or not, but it's actually a decently tame one as trail runs go. Did it still have the 100 meter mud pit you had to get through?

No mud pit his year.  They changed the course to another park.  Apparantly Kickapoo was/is not available.  Veterans said the new course has more hills, but they are shorter.

A 100 meter mud pit??????

Yes! They had people standing a few yards in front of it yelling things like, "Make sure your shoes are tied on tightly." Mine stayed on, but they came half off with each step. My friends came off with every step so she finally picked them up, ran the rest of the way in her socks, and then put them back on when she was done. My avatar is the evidence of that race AFTER much of the mud had been scraped off.

If you're looking for some other good trail runs, the Rock Cut series goes through March.
