Subject: Garmin 305 HRM problem
I got a Garmin 305 for Christmas and only recently have had the time to take it out of the box and start playing with it.

I tried on the HRM this evening but my heart rate did not seem to display.

Any advice?

You probably know this from the manual but just to be sure, it's really tiny.  Other than that, check the battery and really make sure the chest strap is wet.

I just got a new Garmin as well. I barely could read my HR because it is so small. Why would they make it so hard to read especially when you are very tired when trying to read it.

I had that issue at first, but after putting a little water on the contacts, it works fine. Just a word of advice, I always thought that the main contact was the larger center piece. In fact, its actually the 'ribbed' pieces on either side of that. just smear a little water on those and you should have no problem. Make sure you're wearing it when you turn it on. If that doesn't work, make sure the battery is inserted correctly and is good.

Yup, the HR display is tiny...top right corner for me. I haven't really played too much with my 305 yet (xmas, too), but there may be a way to enlarge the display. Isn't there a way to make custom fields appear on the display?

You may also want to check that the HRM feature is turned on in the 305. You can turn it on/off (as well as the cadence sensor and a foot pod). I think you can even do a "rescan" or something.

Lastly, (as somebody mentioned) you might want to make sure the battery works.

Have fun with it! I have!

I don't have mine in front of me, so I can't give you step-by-step instructions,  but you can definitely customize the display on the 305 so that the HR is easier to read.  Take a look through the manual and you'll learn how to do it pretty easily.  You can have up to four different data sets visible on the display at one time and you can scroll through at least three "pages" on the display.

I have mine in one of 4 windows, much easier to see that way. Sometimes I have to put water on the strap so it reads, although once I start moving I usualy sweat enough for good continuity. If the battery is weak, I have to tap it a few times to "wake" it up.

Like the others have said, you can customize the screens and make the HR much bigger.  I prefer the screen with four areas.  I put in total workout time, distance, HR, and pace (for the run).  My bike screens are a little differenct....

I do not have mine with me right now but if you if press one of the bottons on the right side of the Garmin, the HR will take up the whole screen instead of playing around trying  to set up different screens. Discovered this by accident. I will have to check when I get home on how I do this. Just a thought.

The top two buttons on the right, are to scoll through the window displays. either up or down, so either will get to all options.

That being said it pretty easy to costomize them, and then you can scroll through your custom settings. I prefer the 4 window mode, but you could set up 4 screens that each have just one big thing on them and then scroll through them if thats what you want.

Personally the options they have preset up are pretty poor for what I want to see.

At setup you also have to "tell" the unit you are using a HRM. Just like you have to tell it if you're using the cadence sensor or foot pod.

you can change what you see on a screen and make it huge. The biggest problem is it doesnt keep basic time or date w/o satellite hook up so indoor workouts will not record on the correct day.  That is a major defect in my book.
