Wow, my laptop got a little excited and threw this up there before I even entered any text!

Anyways, I live in the DFW area, but Galveston is home for me and I end up there pretty often during the year.  While they've got some great races, it's never really seemed like the best place for training...  Is it just me, or is cycling kind of a nightmare there?  Not a lot of options for pool swimming, either.

If anybody lives in Galveston, and can pass on some of the secrets of trying to train down there (where do you ride, where do you swim, is there anywhere to run that isn't paved?), I would sure appreciate it.

BOI here. 18 years on the island. Gone now obviously, but here's what I got:

Riding...uhhh...at best you can go out past the seawall on the West End. There is some shoulder out there, but the drivers aren't terribly used to seeing cyclists. If I had to ride there, thats where I'd go. There are cycling clubs in League City/LaMarque/Dickinson. They ride some of the country roads around there and Santa Fe, etc. I'm sure you've seen them on the feeder roads from Galveston to Texas City/Dickinson. I would do that (there used to be a race/ride from Galveston to Houston, but not anymore) only in a big group. Not on my own. I'd check with some of the Leaque City and Clear Lake bike shops for some south county rides.

Running: duh...SEAWALL!! Love to run on the path and the beach. Rollerblade too.

I was a member and then worked at the Racquet Club (by the airport and Schiltterbahn) from high school through college. Decent pool (it is/was heated), the workout room was more than sufficient. And of course the racquetball.

I also worked out at UTMB. I don't know the state of either of these places since the storm.

I swam at A&M's pool in high school a couple summers. It was nice.

I am not too optimistic about the Racquet Club being open, but it was one of my favorite places to be. Not many lap swimmers, only the die hards in the winter, but it was great.

Haha, definitely agree with you on the running.  No place better than by the beach, and even some of the little side streets are pretty when everything's blooming.  I've never tried the west end for cycling, been down the east - I'll try it next time I'm there.  Thanks for the tip!

Where on the East End do you (or your parents/friends whatever) do you live? I can't imagine the island being terribly busy now. It is probably only a couple miles (at most) but you could ride from Ferry Road east to the start of the seawall. There usually aren't many cars there.

Me and the family moved from austin to league city back in october (i've been here since end of august and commute on the weekends) I haven't ridden with any groups yet but i have ridden alot of country roads from league city area towards alvin, angleton area.

check out this site
www.pearlandcyclingclub.org

they have some maps that they do for there group rides

as noted, most shops in the area have group rides.

I swim at 24 hr fitness in friendswood, about 2 miles from my house. There is also a one in league city off 45 near dickinson

East end isn't super trafficky right now, but only if you're on the very far end, and it's only about 4 clear miles.  And the road there is pretty crappy : (  But I agree, it's probably the best spot at the moment.

I'll have to check out the Pearland club - I don't like driving places to cycle, buuut looks like it might be the only option at this point :
