Subject: Trying to find cheap races, any non-sanctioned tri's?

I was talking to a co-workers about the high costs of races and he said that I should try to find some mom and pop races or others that are not USAT sanctioned, and maybe some local colleges have races to raise money.  I don't need t-shirts, medals, or any souvenirs or anything, just looking for something competitive to look forward to.

I looked on trifind.com and couldn't really find anything cheap......

I live in Northern Virginia and would drive a couple hours to do them.

Thanks,

-Nick

The Rocky Gap Triathlon, a sprint in Cumberland, MD is non-sanctioned. It's like $38 to register and if you search on the web for the CUmberland YMCA, you will find the information. It's a real tri - just sponsored by the Y, actually held at the ROcky Gap Lodge. The swim is in a lake and the bike and run courses are actually quite hilly (lots of up and down on the bike). It's definitely no-frills, no timing chips, etc. They time you with watches and such. But you asked for cheap, non-sanctioned and close (a little over 2 hours from Northern Virginia). It's actually fairly well-run, since it's been around for a long time, like 20 years or so. You even get a t-shirt

It's held in June, though I don't know the exact date for this year yet - sometime mid-month, last year it was the 14th. And it's on a Saturday, which is a nice change. The lodge is actually in a really pretty area. It'd be worth hanging out for the weekend.

Part of the problem I think is that it is expensive to close roads and get permits in this area, so that cost gets passed on to the competitors.

Here's the link for the Rocky Gap race I mentioned; it's Saturday, June 13th. And they've added an Oly distance this year too.

imo their races are pretty pricey for the distances.  i did the mini sprint last year, it was aroudn $60 for 250m swim/8mi bike/1.something mile run.

Does anyone know if this race is happening?  When I go on their website, they still have dates for 2008.

I sent them an email about the dates for 2009 and unfortunately, they decided they needed a break after 15 years of it and will not to do it this year.  So, looks like I'll be looking for another event.
